摘要:
A new method for figuring the surface profile of optical plastics for precise optics using short wavelength laser light have been proposed. The surface of the optical plastic coated on the glass substrate is ablated by ArF laser light on the interferometer. The surface profile is measured simultaneously with the ablative figuring. The ablation rate of PMMA is 0.003 &mgr;m per pulse at an energy density of 58 mJ/cm2. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Polycrystalline barium titanate (BaTiO3) thin film with smooth surface was grown on silicon substrate at room temperature by using KrF laser ablation technique and KrF laser post‐annealing technique.Insituspectroscopic analysis of excited species in KrF laser‐induced plasma from BaTiO3was also examined and the distance between the target and the surface to fabricate stoichiometric thin films by KrF laser ablation was optimized to be 20 mm. The XRD patterns of BaTiO3thin films post‐annealed with a laser fluence of 0.11 J/cm2at a back pressure of oxygen of 100 mTorr showed the (100), (110), (111), (200), and (211) peaks. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A short history of studies on ion‐laser physics at the Russian facility Arzamas‐16 is presented. Starting in 1965 the explosive shock waves were used for the plasma heating. Both experimental and theoretical studies of the beam optics, fuel compression and laser development are reviewed. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Remarks made in the author’s acceptance lecture for the 1995 Edward Teller Medal are presented and expanded. Topics covered include research on nuclear‐pumped lasers, the first direct e‐beam‐pumped laser, direct energy conversion and advanced fuel fusion, plus recent work on inertial electrostatic confinement. ‘‘Patience’’ and ‘‘optimism’’ are viewed as essential elements needed by scientists following the ‘‘zig‐zag’’ path to fusion energy production. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.
