摘要:
We report the results of a new experimental search for the Pauli-forbidden1s4state of Be, denoted by Be′. Using the Accelerator Mass Spectrometer facility at Purdue, we set limits on the abundance of Be′in metallic Be, Be ore, natural gas, and air(10−14).Our results improve on those obtained in a previous search for Be′by a factor of approximately 300. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We discuss the implications of the spin-statistics connection and of the symmetrization postulate on the quantum states of three identical nuclei arranged in rigid symmetrical molecules. We show that in the case of three identical nuclei a whole class of rotational states are forbidden also by the symmetrization postulate, and not only by the spin-statistics connection. We then present the experiments we are performing onNH3,to search for the possible existence of these states forbidden by the symmetrization postulate, and onCO2,to improve the sensitivity for detection of exchange-antisymmetric states of spin-0 nuclei. Preliminary results of the latter experiment indicate that violations of the statistics for oxygen nuclei, if present, are smaller than10−11,with an improvement of more than two orders of magnitude with respect to previous experiments. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Almost immediately after the development of quantum statistics, physicists were concerned with the implications for the individuality of particles. Such concerns have been further explored from a variety of perspectives during the past fifteen years or so. My intention in this paper is to briefly lay out the various positions that have been adopted and examine the philosophical consequences of the more general forms of statistics that have also been developed. The status of the spin-statistics theorem within this context has been considered in recent work by Hilborn and Yuca and I shall discuss their analysis within the philosophical framework concerning particle individuality. In particular I shall argue that a well-known philosophical position on this issue appears to be less accommodating to generalized forms of quantum statistics and I shall conclude by discussing the philosophical consequences of the supposed relationship between quantum statistics and spin. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
