摘要:
I want to explore in very general terms the possibility that quarks and leptons are actually composite particles. The reason for asking this question is that if they are indeed composite particles, one can introduce new kinds of mass generation mechanisms for the quarks and leptons. This question is a subset of technicolor questions; in technicolor theories, we want to replace the standard Higgs sector of weak interactions by gauge fields and fermions. That means we can’t give masses to the ordinary quarks and leptons by the usual Higgs mechanism and so we have to find other mechanisms. I will talk about one possible mechanism that involves compositeness of quarks and leptons. Therefore, we need a theory that will give us composite fermions.

摘要:
In the Weinberg‐Salam model, as in the various grand unification, models, Higgs fields were introduced to endow particles with mass in a gauge‐invariant way. These Higgs fields seem to be undesirable features of the theory, for they bring with them a large number of arbitrary parameters. Most likely, they are phenomenological order parameters not unlike the Ginsberg‐Landau order parameter in superconductivity. I shall describe some work done, in collaboration with my graduate student Roberto Mendel that attempts to generate masses spontaneously, without Higgs fields. (AIP)

摘要:
THis paper presents a review of experimental upper limits on the branching fractions for various forbidden decay modes of the tau lepton. These are modes which cannot occur in the conventional model in which the tau and its associated neutrino have a unique, conserved lepton number. The limits are based on data acquired by the Mark II Detector Collaboration at SPEAR.
