摘要:
Electric field-induced changes in shapes of smectic-A domains in an isotropic phase has been observed in the binary mixture of octyloxycyanobiphenyl with dodecyl alcohol. It is found that the average size of hemispherical smectic-A domains on substrate surfaces is decreased with increasing electric field. These experimental results can be explained by the electric-field induced spontaneous curvature. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The mechanism of appearance of order on chaos with Gaussian white noise is investigated in the one-dimensional return map of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky chaos. This order (noise-induced order) appears as the constancy of the topological entropy and the decrease of the Kolmogorov entropy. Analysis of the five-times iterated return map reveals that “noise-induced order” is caused by the increase of the length of the laminar region and the subsequent change of the invariant density, where noise generates the stable point on the diagonal. The result of the mutual information also supports this fact. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We studied the cooperative generation of non-equilibrium localized phonons (fractons), which can be observed in experimental studying of the relaxation of groups of excited atoms after the passage of short laser pulse through the glass sample. The increasing of the absorption coefficient in the process of the excitation of glasses by short laser pulse with relatively small power is conditioned by the generation of the non-equilibrium coherent localized phonons in the process of the relaxation of non-equilibrium excitations, which strongly change the topology of the random potential and, thus, open a new channel of the interband light absorption. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We study early stages of spinodal decomposition (SD) in polymer/liquid crystal mixtures by solving linearized time-dependent Landau-Ginzburg equations for concentration (conserved order parameter) and orientation (nonconserved order parameter). We find a new SD process driven by instability of the orientational order parameter. In this case, the scattering peak of compositional structure factor evolves continuously to lower wavenumber via a series of power law regimes, which is initiallyt1/3in our minimal model. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Using field-theoretic methods, we obtain the low-density expansion of the free energy of systems where two ionic species with different valences (defined as the absolute value of the charge in units ofe, hereq1andq2) and hard-core radii (d1andd2) are present. The resulting expression (calculated up to order 5/2 in the concentration) is exact, and allows one to treat, in a unified way, electrolytes (whereq1∼q2andd1∼d2) and charged macro-particles suspensions (as for instance colloidal suspensions, where the size and the charge asymmetry are very large and play a crucial role). ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Arrays of cation-exchanged beads loaded with ferroin immersed in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction mixture, show, not only a phase propagating mode among the beads, but also a switching among such the several modes. A modified Bru¨sserator equation leads an equation set of phase deviations of these beads which includes a dynamical matrix; it can explain the switchings. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Interesting complex systems with magnetic shape-memory functions are considered, which appear as cooperation between ferromagnetic and structural transitions. Their phase transitions and critical behavior are derived and discussed in the mean field and the renormalization theories. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
