摘要:
Inertial confinement fusion driven by beams of heavy ions is an attractive route to controlled fusion. In the U.S., induction accelerators are being developed as ‘‘drivers’’ for this process. This paper is divided into two main sections. In the first section, the concept of induction‐accelerator driven heavy‐ion fusion is briefly reviewed, and the U.S. program of experiments and theoretical investigations is described. In the second, a ‘‘taxonomy’’ of space‐charge‐dominated beam physics issues is presented, accompanied by a brief discussion of each area. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We review the status of the experimental campaign being carried out at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, involving scaled investigations of the acceleration and transport of space‐charge dominated heavy ion beams. The ultimate goal of these experiments is to help lay the groundwork for a larger scale ion driven inertial fusion reactor, the purpose of which is to produce inexpensive and clean electric power. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Successful transport of induction‐driven beams for heavy‐ion fusion requires careful control of the longitudinal space charge. The usual control technique is the periodic application of time‐varying longitudinal electric fields, called ‘‘ears,’’ that, on the average, balance the space‐charge field. This technique is illustrated using a fluid/envelope code CIRCE, and the sensitivity of the method to errors in these ear fields is illustrated. The possibility that periodic ear fields also excite the longitudinal instability is examined. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We have studied the collective instabilities in isochronous storage rings with a linac‐type analysis. Simple criteria for avoiding the longitudinal and transverse instabilities are developed by employing a two particle model. Numerical examples show that these conditions do not impose serious performance restrictions for currently proposed isochronous storage rings. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Electron Beams emitted from a point field emitter and its array are proposed to be a promising particle source for the advanced use of the beam where the brightness is required to be as large as possible. Described are the problems to be studied related to the generation and propagation of the beam such as the tunneling from the inside of the cathode material to vacuum, beam dynamics including space charge effect associate to the high current intensity on the emitting surface and redistribution of the beam distribution function, and interaction between the beamlets coming from the array of the emitters. Results of the preliminary measurement of the intrinsic emittance of the beam are also given. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A high‐intensity CW photocathode electron injector test stand has been designed and is being built for a 200 MeV two‐pass recirculating CW superconducting accelerator. The accelerator is being designed to drive a high average power (1 kW) UV free‐electron laser (FEL). This FEL requires beam emittances as small as 11 mm mrad for the transverse normalized rms emittance and 30 deg‐keV for the longitudinal rms emittance. The electrons contained in a 135 pC charged bunch are compressed from an initial bunch length of 90 ps (6&sgr;) at the photocathode down to 1.2 ps (a factor of 75 compression) at the wiggler. In this paper, we present our studies on the space charge effects that determine the magnitude of beam emittance growth during the various stages of beam transport from the injector through the driver accelerator to the wiggler. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The design and analysis of a high brightness electron beam experiment under construction at Sandia National Laboratory is presented. The beam energy is 12 MeV, the current 35–40 kA, the rms radius 0.5 mm, and the pulse duration FWHM 40 ns. The accelerator is SABRE [J. Corley, J. A. Alexander, P. J. Pankuch, C. E. Heath, D. L. Johnson, J. J. Ramirez, and G. J. Denison, inProceedingsoftheEighthInternationalIEEEPulsedPowerConference, San Diego, California, 1991 (IEEE, New York, 1991), p. 920], a pulsed inductive voltage adder, and the electron source is a magnetically immersed foilless diode. This experiment has as its goal to stretch the technology to the edge and produce the highest possible electron current in a submillimiter radius beam. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
General conditions for minimum emittance double bend achromat, single dipole minimum emittance, and the three bend achromat lattices are derived. A condition for the minimum emittance three bend (or multi‐bend) achromat lattice is derived. The condition shows that the minimum emittance achievable is the same as that of the double bend achromat. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Panel discussions about concerns with the design of high brightness charged particle beams due to the interplay of the beam emittance and the space charge forces inherent in such high brightness beams. High current ion linacs, heavy ion fusion, and high current electorn linacs are the types of machines whcih have these design considerations.(AIP) ©American Institute of Physics
