Recent results of six experiments studying inclusive neutral particle production are summarized and compared. The beam momentum ranges from 10.5 GeV/c to 205 GeV/c.

Nuclear track emulsions were exposed to 200 GeV protons at the National Accelerator Laboratory. One of the emulsion plates was loaded with granules of Tungsten. Interactions in the emulsion and with the Tungsten granules were located and angular measurements were made on the shower particles. The average number of charged evaporation particles produced on Tungsten was found to be 29.4 ± 4.3, which is much larger than expected. Moreover, the average multiplicity of shower particles is 16.8 ± 3.8, about twice as large as that for p‐p interactions. The corresponding values for the emulsion are 7.2 ± 0.5 and 13.9 ± 0.6 for the multiplicity of evaporation and shower particles, respectively. The angular distribution of shower particles produced on Tungsten was compared to that for p‐p interactions. These data are in qualitative agreement with recent calculations by Fishbane and Trefil.

We describe the physical characteristics of the Experiment 2B hybrid spectrometer now operating at NAL, consisting of the 30‐inch bubble chamber and wide‐gap optical spark chambers. Details of the equipment and operating conditions are presented. Further details of track reconstruction and bubble chamber/spark chamber hookup software are presented, along with results for 15–200 GeV/c tracks.

A survey is given of the lessons to be learned from first‐generation strong‐interaction experiments at the National Accelerator Laboratory and the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings. A program to study the properties of diffraction dissociation is urged for the NAL bubble chamber experiments. Throughout, the emphasis is placed upon conclusions of a general nature rather than those which depend on details of models.

We discuss four aspects of the phenomenology of high energy production processes: the approach to scaling, the relation between inclusive cross‐sections and total cross‐sections, the rapidity charge density, and left‐right multiplicity distributions. The goal of the discussion is to provide a slightly different slant on important features of the data.

The one dimensional language is employed in the description of some of the data recently available from the NAL and ISR. To illustrate the phenomenological value of such a description, left‐right multiplicity data are discussed in some detail. In addition to the more orthodox, a few non‐standard suggestions are made for presenting data based on the one dimensional ideas.

摘要:

The eikonal approach to high energy scattering and particle production is reviewed. The energy dependence of the eikonal phase is discussed. The effect of the fragmentation of the incident particles on the energy dependence of cross sections is considered. It is pointed out that the opening of diffractive channels leads to a decrease in the total cross section for a wide class of Feynman diagram models.

摘要:

Gribov's theory of the Pomeranchon is briefly reviewed. It is then demonstrated that the recent observed rise in proton‐proton total cross section at CERN ISR and the various structures in the elastic cross section can be simultaneously explained within the framework of this theory.
