摘要:
The effect of the membrane‐membrane interactions in multilayer membrane systems on the free energy is investigated. An approximation by which the free energy increment &Dgr;finduced by the interactions is expressed in terms of the membrane‐membrane distance distribution function is introduced.The analytic expression of the distance distribution function is derived on the basis of the Monte Carlo calculation. It is found that &Dgr;fbehaves as &Dgr;f∼ &rgr;4for the small membrane density &rgr;. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
The kinetic coefficients of critical polymer solutions are calculated by the mode coupling theory. We predict that the critical divergence of viscosity should be suppressed with increasing the molecular weight. The diffusion constant and the dynamic structure factor are also calculated. The present results explicitly show that the critical dynamics of polymer solutions should be affected by an extra spatio‐temporal scale intrinsic to polymer solutions, and are consistent with the experiment of Tanaka,et al.© 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
We present the results of our numerical attempts to simulate the configuration of a nematic liquid crystal around a spherical particle. We focus on the effect of an external field, such as a magnetic field or a flow field, on the director configuration and the topological defects accompanied by the particles. The use of adaptive mesh refinement together with a tensor order parameter for the description of the orientational order makes it feasible to tract the dynamics of a nematic liquid crystal without any special treatment of the topological defects. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
Brownian dynamics simulations have been carried out for suspensions of oblate spheroidal particles interacting via the Gay‐Berne potential. The system changed from isotropic phase to nematic one with increasing the particle concentration. In addition, the behavior of particles in simple shear flows was simulated; the shear was imposed on the systems in nematic phase at rest. The systems exhibited various motions of the director depending on the shear rate, e.g. continuous rotations of director at low shear rates and flow aligning at high shear rates. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
We performed molecular dynamics simulation of binary system of 432 hard spheres and 1008 parallel hard spherocylinders. We calculated mean square displacements of molecules. Smectic layer structure was monitored through structure factor along molecular long axis. Results indicate that the smectic layer formation decreases diffusion of molecules along the layer normal. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
Applying quasi‐static deformation to a dry granular system induces a series of faults. We numerically investigate idealized systems with regular initial arrangements of particles and find that microscopic shear zones develop through a fingering‐like instability before the creation of faults. Considering infinitesimal deformations of the system, we find that this instability is caused by interactions among slips at contact points between particles, which are communicated through the displacement field. © 2004 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
The coefficient of normal restitution (COR) in an oblique impact is theoretically studied. Using a two‐dimensional lattice models for an elastic disk and an elastic wall, we investigate the dependency of COR on an incident angle and demonstrate that COR can exceed one and have a peak against an incident angle in our simulation. Finally, we explain these phenomena based upon the phenomenological theory of elasticity. © 2004 American Institute of Physics
