摘要:
Two‐component models have been quite successful in fitting multiplicity distributions in high‐energy hadronic collisions. The fact that the diffractive component is considerably smaller than the short‐range‐correlation component suggests the possibility of a perturbative expansion of the high‐energy total cross section. The development of such an expansion is discussed, as well as some of its consequences.

摘要:
We review threshold effects and oscillating cross sections in the context of models (such as the multiperipheral) which employ factorization and indefinite repetition in the t‐channel. The origin of logarithmic energy thresholds is illustrated by the ABFST model and applied to antibaryon production and rising cross sections at high energy. We then discuss large‐mass diffraction dissociation and argue that this process is not responsible for the increase in the p‐p total cross section at ISR energies.

摘要:
We review the recent applications of various parton models, to the problem of hadron‐hadron scattering at large momentum transfers. Models which allow direct parton‐parton interaction as well as those that do not are considered. Predictions for the structure of hadronic final states (whether or not transverse jets exist), associated multiplities, and the s and t dependencies of inclusive and exclusive cross‐sections are described for the two types of models and compared with available data. The relation of the large momentum transfer (deep) region to the small momentum transfer (Regge) region is also discussed.

摘要:
The relevance of galactic X‐ray astronomy to the study of compact stellar objects is discussed. After some general remarks about X‐ray astronomy, a brief picture of the X‐ray sky is presented. Finally, a more detailed discussion of two specific galactic X‐ray sources is presented. Observations of Cygnus X‐1 and Hercules X‐1 are discussed in the light of their possible identification with a black hole and a neutron star respectively.
