摘要:
Quantum mechanics is formulated on the true space of physical states—the projective Hilbert space. It is found that the postulates of quantum mechanics assume an intrinsically geometric form. In particular, observables are represented by real‐valued functions, the Lie bracket on the space of observables is given by a Poisson structure, and the Schro¨dinger evolution is equivalent to the flow along a Hamiltonian vector field.

摘要:
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational‐Wave Observatory (LIGO) is part of an international effort to search for gravitational waves emitted by astrophysical sources. Detector sites at Hanford, Washington and Livingston, Louisiana, will consist of interferometers to detect the small displacements of suspended test masses induced by the gravitational waves. In the initial phase of LIGO, three interferometers will be operated in coincidence as a single detector. Construction of the LIGO facilities has recently begun, while research and design continues on the development of the initial interferometer design. Completion of the facility and initiation of the detector commissioning and early running is expected to begin approximately in the year 2000.

摘要:
An extension of the loop representation of quantum gravity is studied. It has computational and mathematical advantages. From the computational point of view, it is simpler to find solutions of the constraints. From the mathematical point of view, the extended representation provides a new scenario to analyze the regularization problem in quantum gravity.

摘要:
A wide class of solutions, endowed with stationary and axial symmetries, of the EMDA equations are explicitly given. The chosen coordinate system is such that the structural functions are expressible as ratio of polynomials of at most second degree. It is equipped with six continuous free parameters and two discrete constants. In particular, it contains the generalized Sen black hole with mass, NUT parameter, charge, angular momentum, dilaton and axion limiting parameters, and related magnetic, dilaton, and axion charges.

Solutions to the Einstein equations of general relativity are constructed using numerical methods on high performance computing platforms. This article reviews the methods used to obtain numerical solutions to the Einstein equations and discusses some results from recent numerical simulations of highly nonlinear cosmological spacetimes as well as for time dependent black holes that emit gravitational waves.

摘要:
With the close approaches to Saturn of Voyager 1 and 2 during their navigation in the solar system, many new features were discovered in the rings of this planet. In particular, kinks, waves, clumps, and even apparent braids in Saturn’sFring can be appreciated. In this work we describe some models that could possibly explain this behavior. All these models are based only in the Newtonian gravitational law.

摘要:
A sample of data obtained at the AGS in the study of heavy‐ion collisions are presented which show that baryonic matter at very high temperature and density is formed in these collisions. The observation of directed flow in collisions with heavy beams is also discussed.

摘要:
Analyses of elastic angular distribution measurements for light systems above 10 MeV/nucleon have permitted the determination of ion‐ion potentials free from discrete ambiguities. The optical potentials need to be strongly attractive, weakly absorbing, and energy dependent. The phenomenological potentials, having Woods Saxon form factors, are similar to those obtained through a double folding of theDDM3Yeffective interaction. Extension of these results for12C+12Cdown to 6 MeV/nucleon describes angular distribution measurements and explains the gross structure in the excitation function as due to Airy minima drifting through 90°. Alternative analyses of recent data in the same energy range suggest potentials with similar characteristics.

摘要:
The pseudo‐spin symmetry is reviewed. A mapping that produces the separation of the total angular momentum into pseudo‐orbital and pseudo‐spin degrees of freedom is discussed, together with the analytic transformations that take us from the normal parity space to the eigenstates of a pseudo‐oscillator with one quanta less. The many‐particle version of the unitary transformation to the pseudo‐SU(3) space is established. As an example, these symmetries are used to describe the double beta decay phenomenon in heavy deformed nuclei.
