摘要:
In view of the new scientific programs established for the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) era, the way to face the technological challenges in computing was develop a new concept of GRID [1, 2] computing. We show some examples and, in particular, a proposal for high energy physicists in countries like Brazil. Due to the big amount of data and the need of close collaboration it will be impossible to work in research centers and universities very far from Fermilab or CERN unless a GRID architecture is built. An important effort is being made by the international community to up to date their computing infrastructure and networks. © 2003 American Institute of Physics

The experimental layout of the BTeV experiment at Fermilab is described. The primary goal of the experiment is to look for physics beyond the Standard Model(SM) by performing precise measurements of the Cabibbo‐Kobayashi‐Maskawa matrix parameters to look for deviations from the SM predictions. 摘要:
At high energy density, nuclear matter is predicted to undergo a phase transition to a deconfined state consisting of free quarks and gluons. The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is dedicate to the experimental study of high energy nuclear collisions with the goal of studying such a deconfined state, the Quark‐Gluon Plasma. I will discuss recent results from the STAR experiment pertaining to which suggest novel nuclear effects in the production of high transverse momentum hadrons. © 2003 American Institute of Physics

A few open questions in the experimental QCD programme at theepcollider HERA are discussed warranting the extended studies planned at the upgraded accelerator. The large momentum transfers accessible will enable searches for Physics beyond the Standard Model and competitive electroweak consistency checks. 摘要:
Diffractive DIS has been established at HERA and detailed information has been extracted on the structure function of the Pomeron mediating the diffractive process. The gluon contribution dominates, about 75 &percent; of the Pomeron momentum is carried by gluons. The experimental results on dijet andD*‐meson production in diffractive DIS are compatible with LO QCD predictions supporting the idea of QCD factorization to be valid.t,Q2andMV2of heavy vector mesons provide a hard scale for the processep→eV p. The measured helicity spin matrix elements for the reactionep→e&rgr;0pare in good agreement with perturbative QCD predictions based on 2‐gluon‐exchange. © 2003 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
In recent decades, cosmic ray air showers initiated by high‐energy proton or nucleus collisions in the atmosphere have been studied with large area experiments on the surface of the Earth or with muon measurements deep underground. In principle, these cosmic ray experiments explore two completely different realms of physics, particle astrophysics and particle interaction physics, which are, however, intimately related by the interpretation of the data. In this paper we briefly review the cosmic ray physics activities developed at CERN in the last years. In particular we present some results from a small underground cosmic ray experiment and we discuss the capabilities of ALICE to detect high multiplicity muon events arising from cosmic ray air showers and some other astroparticle phenomena. © 2003 American Institute of Physics

摘要:
We describe the design and operation of the first stage of the EAS‐UAP extensive air shower array, as a detector of very high energy cosmic rays (1016>Eo> 1014eV). The array is located at the Campus of Puebla University. It consist of 18 liquid scintillator detectors, with an active surface of 1m2each and a detector spacing of 20 m in a square grid. One Auger Water Cherenkov detector is also included as part of the array. In this report we discuss the stability, the calibration, the arrival direction and lateral distribution function reconstruction capabilities of the detector array, as derived from the 10 detectors in operation in the first stage. Our results shows that the angular accuracy in arrival direction is less than 5.5° in the range from 20° to 60°. The measurements in the Water Cherenkov Detector show us the possibility to separete electromagnetic and muon component. The main characteristics of the array allow us also to use it as educational and training facility. © 2003 American Institute of Physics

The connections between cosmic rays, the particle showers they produce after entering the Earth’s atmosphere, the physical processes that take place during the shower development, and the shower observables that can be measured experimentally, are analyzed from a general perspective, but focusing on the hadronic interactions. The influence of different hadronic models on shower development, and their impact on quantities experimentally measurable, is discussed. © 2003 American Institute of Physics
