摘要:
CP violation has so far been observed in one system only, namely in the decays of neutral kaons, and it can still be described by a single real quantity corresponding to a superweak scenario. In these lectures I describe why limitations on CP invariance are a particularly fundamental phenomenon and what experimental information is available. The KM ansatz constitutes the minimal implementation of CP violation: without requiring unknown degrees of freedom it can reproduce the known CP phenomenology. It unequivocally predicts large or even huge CP asymmetries of various kinds in the decays of beauty hadrons. New theoretical technologies will enable us in the foreseeable future to express at least some of these predictions in a quantitatively reliable fashion. There is tremendous potential for discovering New Physics in beauty transitions. Continuing efforts in strange decays and further dedicated searches for electric dipole moments and for CP asymmetries in charm decays are likewise essential for discovering crucial elements that still are missing in the puzzle that is Nature’s Grand Design. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
In this talk I begin with some general discussion of model building in particle theory, emphasizing the need for motivation and testability. Three illustrative examples are then described. The first is the Left-Right model which provides an explanation for the chirality of quarks and leptons. The second is the 331-model which offers a first step to understanding the three generations of quarks and leptons. Third and last is the SU(15) model which can accommodate the light leptoquarks possibly seen at HERA. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
These lectures give an introduction to duality in Quantum Field Theory. We discuss the phases of gauge theories and the implications of the electric-magnetic duality transformation to describe the mechanism of confinement. We review the exact results ofN=1supersymmetric QCD and the Seiberg-Witten solution ofN=2super Yang-Mills. Some of the recent results on nonperturbative String Theory are also briefly discussed. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The origin and nature ofCPviolation is one of the most important questions in elementary particle physics, and studies ofBmeson decay are expected to be the key to understanding this phenomenon. MostBmeson decay results come from experiments ate+e−colliders, and this type of facility will play a major role in elucidatingCPviolation. I discuss the contributions toward understandingCPviolation already made by studies ofBdecay ate+e−colliders and prospects for the future. I emphasize the opportunities for studyingCPviolation and the challenges encountered in developing quantitative understanding of the measurements. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Goals and motivations for CP violation studies in B decays with asymmetrice+e−colliders are discussed. General experimental issues and some aspects of the planned machines and experiments are reviewed along with strategies for testing the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) mechanism for CP violation in the standard model. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The role of hadron colliders in the observation and study of CP violation inBdecays is discussed. We show that hadron collider experiments can play a significant role in the early studies of these phenomena and will play an increasingly dominant role as the effort turns towards difficult to measure decays, especially those of theBsmeson, and sensitive searches for rare decays and subtle deviations from Standard Model predictions. We conclude with a discussion of the relative merits of hadron collider detectors with ‘forward’ vs ’central’ rapidity coverage. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The phenomenological implications of a low-energy supersymmetry are surveyed, with particular attention given to unification constraints and the role of a large top quark Yukawa couplings. Generic expectations for sparticle mass spectra are presented along with prospects for their discovery and study at present and future colliders. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The potential of muon colliders to address fundamental physics issues is explored, with emphasis on understanding the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking. Thes-channel production of Higgs bosons, unique to a muon collider, along with precision measurements ofW+W−,tt¯,andZhthresholds would determine the properties of Higgs bosons and test electroweak radiative corrections. At the high energy frontier, a 4 TeV muon collider is ideally suited to study either the production of supersymmetric scalar particles or a strongly interactingWWsector. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The Large Electron Positron (LEP)e+e−collider entered a new phase in Fall 1995 when center of mass energies for 130 GeV were achieved for the first time. Since then, the energy and luminosity of LEP has steadily increased leading to the observation of new phenomena predicted by the standard model and improved sensitivity for physics beyond the standard model. This article reviews the results for the first full year of LEP II and the future prospects between now and the year 2000. ©1998 American Institute of Physics.
