摘要:
Following a broad summary of our view of nuclear structure in 1974, I will discuss the key elements we have learned in the past 25 years from the research at the M.I.T. Bates Linear Accelerator Center and its sister electron accelerator laboratories. Electron scattering has provided the essential measurements for most of our progress. The future is bright for nuclear structure research as our ability to realistically calculate nuclear structure observables has dramatically advanced and we are increasingly able to incorporate an understanding of quantum chromodynamics into our picture of the nucleus. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

In this talk I will try to review some of the key experiments that have demonstrated the need to go beyond the mean field approach in the theoretical description. In the second part I show our approach in generating nuclear wave functions that include the correlations. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

We discuss the understanding of quasi-elastic inclusive electron-nucleus scattering. Particular emphasis is placed on the scaling property of the data, the status of the Coulomb sum rule and the pussle of the excess transverse strength. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A brief review is presented of the ideas that motivated the first studies of the(e,e′p)reaction type, but with proton probes. The reasons for the evolution to the electron probe are presented along with some interesting results that were observed. These results provided many of the reasons for building Bates. The present status of the field is discussed where interference and polarization observables play a prominent role and define much of the future course of research. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Short range correlations in nuclei are interesting because they are necessary to explain the stability of nuclei against collapse. From this follows that they are related to the internal structure of nucleons which is still poorly understood at low energies. Three experiments relevant to this context are presented. In an exploratory experiment of the12C(e,e′pp)reaction with a 4&pgr;-BGO ball and a high resolution magnetic spectrometer of the three spectrometer setup at the Mainz Microtron MAMI the optimal kinematical region for a study of short range correlations is found. In an selective experiment of the16O(e,e′pp)14Creaction using all three spectrometers models of the reaction mechanism and effects of a hard and soft core of theN Npotential are studied. In the12C(e,e′p&pgr;)11Creaction again using all three spectrometers evidence for narrow bound &Dgr; states in12Cis derived which may be related to the very short mean free path of the &Dgr;-decay &pgr;s in nuclei. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The magnetic electron scattering program carried out at the Bates Linear Accelerator Center since 1977 is described. This is preceded by a brief discussion of some of the accelerator developments that made such experiments possible, and that have led to the present status of the Bates Laboratory. A short history of the very beginning of magnetic electron scattering, both elastic and inelastic, is also given. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The experimental information concerning elastic electron-deuteron scattering is reviewed, with emphasis on latest results at intermediate to high momentum transfers. The Bates Linear Accelerator Center played a key role in initiating and developing the necessary measurements of polarization observables, and will continue to do so with the BLAST project. The interpretation of observables and form factors is illustrated with some recent theoretical calculations, while their asymptotic behavior is discussed in the light of perturbative quantum chromo-dynamics. In connection with the search for quark effects in nuclei, a qualitative description of the proton charge distribution is attempted. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
This talk shows recent results for the contributions of Meson Exchange Currents (MEC) and relativistic effects on the elastic electron scattering structure functions of the deuteron in the context of several recent models. These calculations show that these effects are substantial at 1 GeV2and above and that care must be taken in consistently treating these effects within the context of a given model. The current data suggest that the contributions to the structure functions from the &rgr;&pgr;&ggr; meson exchange current must be small. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
