Topics considered in the 1988 Rockport, Maine conference on Intersections Between Particle and Nuclear Physics are summarized. CP violation in KL→&pgr;&pgr;, mising &tgr; decays, Cabbibo, Kobayashi, Maskawa parameters in B−meson decay, Hanbury−Brown−Twiss correlations in high energy heavy ion collisions, application of perturbative QCD to exclusive processes, positron peaks in heavy ion collisions, mesons in the 1−2 GeV region, structure functions, cracks in the foundations of the Quark Model, inhomogeneous nucleosynthesis, and astronomy with ultraviolet energy cosmic rays are covered in this summary. 摘要:
The scattering of protons off individual nucleons in the nucleus, known as ‘quasi‐free’ scattering, gives information on the modification of the nuclear force inside the nuclear medium. In order to extract this information, we need to know the nucleon‐nucleon (N‐N) interaction in free space, and the propagation of the proton through the nucleus (from elastic scattering). Direct comparison of the analyzing powers and polarizations for quasi‐free scattering as opposed to N‐N scattering show large (40%) differences. Conventional (non‐relativistic) calculations are unable to reproduce this effect. Relativistic calculations, which use large, opposing vector and scalar potentials reproduce this effect for both isoscalar and isovector inclusive reactions and for exclusive (p, 2p) reactions.

摘要:
The study of kaon decays has long played a central role in the development of particle physics. Indeed, early experimental observations of kaons and hyperons in cosmic ray data helped establish the field as one distinct from nuclear physics. Since that time, kaons have led us to the discoveries of strangeness, parity non‐conservation, CP violation, and have provided the first hints of extra quark generations. It is remarkable that three decades after the first accelerator‐based experiments, the study of kaon decays still promises the possibility of unmasking new physical phenomena. The subject of this talk are the current kaon decay experiments undertaken at Fermilab (E731), CERN SPS (NA31), and Brookhaven AGS (E780, E791, E777, E787). (AIP)

摘要:
We have re‐examined our arguments against the dominance of perturbative QCD over soft, non‐perturbative effects in exclusive processes at currently availableQ2. We find that claims that our earlier objections can be overcome are based on the illegitimate use of perturbative QCD, and that the perturbative contributions are much smaller than soft contributions (which are capable of explaining the data) in the simple test cases of the pion and nucleon electromagnetic form factors. We see no reason why our results should not generalize, and conclude that there is no justification for the continued application of perturbative QCD to exclusive processes.

摘要:
At intermediate energies, all nuclei exhibit a broad peak in their inelastic electron scattering response in which incoherent scatterings from individual nucleons play a major role. Description of this response relies on both an understanding of the nuclear many‐body problem with its consequent multiparticle correlation physics as well as knowledge of the appropriate elementary‐particle degrees of freedom from which to construct the nucleus. A review will be given of the progress achieved in these areas by means of both inclusive and coincidence electron scattering experiments. Some current theoretical approaches will also be described.

摘要:
The third generation of quarks, anticipated in 1973 by Kobayashi and Maskawa as one of the possibilities to explain CP violation of theKo‐meson system within the framework of the Standard Model and in 1975 by the discovery of the third generation of leptons, was found at FNAL in 1977. It showed up in form of the &Ugr;(1S) resonance, the lowest‐energy 1−−state of the b‐quark‐ anti‐b‐antiquark system. Experiments at DESY in 1978 showed that the b‐quark has charge 1/3. These and further experiments showed that the b‐ anti‐b system follows the same spectroscopic and strong‐interaction rules as the c‐ anti‐c system. The physics of the b‐ anti‐b system has been studied extensively at the DESY e+e−storage ring DORIS using the detectors DASP−II, PLUTO, LENA, Crystal Ball, and ARGUS, and from 1980 on at the Cronell e+e−ring CESR using CLEO and CUSB. Today we know twelve states of the b‐ anti‐b system in contrast to seven of the c‐ anti‐c system and only four in the e+e−bound state system positronium. (AIP)

摘要:
The study of very high energy (VHE) and ultrahigh UHE) energy quanta from specific astrophysical sources may yield otherwise unobtainable information about processes in the macroscopic particle physics laboratory environment of a neutron star. Considerable existing data indicate that such quanta have already been observed. However, some data suggest that primaries from at least two neutron stars behave according to unknown physics mechanisms.
