摘要:
There has been exciting progress in recent years in the search for a permanent electric dipole moment of atoms, molecules, and the neutron. An EDM can exist only if time reversal symmetry is violated. Although such a dipole has not yet been detected, theories of possible new physics, such as Supersymmetry, predict the existence of EDMs within reach of modern experiments. In this brief introduction and survey, I discuss current and planned EDM experiments, and summarize what recent results imply about the size of possible T violating (and hence CP violating) interactions among elementary particles. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We give a detailed description of a recently completed search for a permanent electric dipole moment of199Hg.The measurement is done in an entirely new apparatus that improves the statistical sensitivity per unit time by an order of magnitude compared with the previous version of the experiment. Our measurements gived(199Hg)=−(1.06±0.49±0.40)×10−28 e cm,which we interpret as an upper limit|d(199Hg)|<2.1×10−28 e cm(95&percent; C.L.). This improves the previous limit on the199HgEDM by a factor of 4. The result sets new limits on&thgr;&vec;QCD,chromo-EDMs of the quarks, and CP violation in Supersymmetric models. We also briefly describe subsequent upgrades of the experiment which improved our sensitivity by another factor of 2. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We describe the current status of the experiment at Sussex to measure the electron’s permanent electric dipole momentdeusing the paramagnetic molecule YbF. We consider a number of systematic effects which could mimicdeand conclude that they are far below the current experimental sensitivity. As of June 2001 we have accumulated over 20 hours of data, which combined give a measurementde=0.6±4×10−26 e.cm.©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The metastable excited statea(1)[3&Sgr;+]of PbO is proposed as a candidate system in which to search for an electron electric dipole moment (EDM). It is shown that the sensitivity to an electron EDM(de)could reach10−31 e⋅cm—an improvement of>104over the current limit. Observation of an electron EDM would provide definitive evidence for physics beyond the standard model, and many currently favored theories predict|de|>10−31.The sensitivity of the proposed technique arises from a combination of several unique properties of PbO, which simultaneously provide a large EDM enhancement factor, narrow magnetic resonance lines, and high counting rates. The structure of the nearly degenerate &OHgr;-doublet system in PbO permits the use of unique and powerful techniques for the rejection of systematic effects. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Magneto-optical (Faraday) rotation is a process in which the plane of light polarization rotates as light propagates through a medium along the direction of a magnetic field. In atomic vapors where ground state atomic polarization relaxes very slowly (relaxation rates ≳1 Hz), there arise ultranarrow, light-power-dependent (nonlinear) features in the magnetic field dependence of Faraday rotation. The shot-noise-limited sensitivity of a magnetometer based on nonlinear Faraday rotation can exceed10−11 G/Hz,corresponding to a sensitivity of∼10−6 Hz/Hzto Zeeman sublevel shifts. Here we discuss recent progress in magnetometry based on nonlinear optical rotation and consider the application of these methods to searches for fundamental-symmetry-violating interactions. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A modulated-source Eo¨tvo¨s experiment was performed at the Little Goose Lock on the Snake River during the summers of 1988 and 1990. Although results of the first experiment were published by the author in 1989, the results from a more sophisticated version of the experiment performed in 1990 are published here for the first time. The 1990 experiment involved a freely oscillating toroidal Cu-Pb pendulum suspended from a 5-&mgr;m tungsten fiber having a period of 790 sec and a torsion constant of 0.00035 erg/rad. The lock contained≈1.7×108 kgof water which could be filled or drained within about ten minutes. Results from 40 2-hr runs (during half of which the pendulum was rotated 180°) showed no differential acceleration on the Cu-Pb masses from the water with a limit of±2.4×10−9 cm/sec2.Angular deflection measurements were based on a time-interval method developed previously by the author. Fiber drift was roughly constant during runs and always in the counterclockwise direction looking down on the apparatus, a result which may have arisen through interaction of the Coriolis force with vertical vibration of the pendulum. The principal error in measurement was from small discontinuous changes in the fiber drift-rate. The fiber motion suggested the presence of a small amount of second harmonic which was removed from the data by digital filtering. Direct measurement showed that pendulum tilt was a negligible source of systematic error. A 2-&sgr; limit was set on the “isospin coupling constant” of&agr;0=±0.001at&lgr;=100-m.©2001 American Institute of Physics.
