摘要:
The potentially large background produced from the decay products of muons could affect the quality of the physics in a high energy muon collider. This paper examines the kinds of background present and their expected rate. The results are based on a simulation of muon colliders with center of mass energies of 100 GeV, 500 GeV and 4 TeV. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

We describe a method for designing the acceleration systems for a muon collider, with particular application and examples for a high energy muon collider. This paper will primarily concentrate on design considerations coming from longitudinal motion, but some transverse issues will be briefly discussed. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Muon colliders might greatly extend the energy frontier of collider physics. One can contemplate circular colliders with center-of-mass energies in excess of 10 TeV. Some physics issues that might be relevant at such a machine are discussed. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Because of the predominance of large emittances, muon storage rings have a tendency to being rather sensitive to nonlinear effects. In this paper we study the effects of the nonlinearities due to the lattice elements’ fringe fields, which have a fundamentally different behavior from normal multipole terms. It is found that for given scenarios for lattices and emittances, the fringe field effects have dramatic influences on the dynamics and stability of particles and hence require careful study of correction options. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Any consideration of future physics facilities must be made in the context of the Tevatron and the LHC. I discuss some examples of physics results which could emerge from these machines and the resulting questions which would remain for a high energye+e−collider. Particular attention is paid to the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. If a light Higgs boson exists, it will be observed at the LHC and the role of any later accelerator will be to map out the Higg’s boson mass and couplings and then determine the space of possible models. If there is no light Higgs boson then some effects of a strongly interacting electroweak symmetry breaking sector will be observed at the LHC and I discuss the role of a high energy linear collider in exploring this scenario. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A lattice example has been designed for a machine intended to be part of the acceleration system for a muon collider or neutrino factory muon storage ring. This machine is a Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) of the radial-sector type invented at MURA. The motivation for studying this type of accelerator is the possibility of accelerating particles over a large energy range in a radially compact magnetic structure. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We choose a number of physics processes where collisions of equal-charge muons show particular promise when the center-of-mass energy can be raised well above the few-TeV level, and illustrate the gains that can be realized by clever experimentation. We stress, in this context, the need for more work on higher degrees of muon polarization. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Collective single-beam effects, driven by impedances and wake fields in the vacuum chamber of high-energy muon colliders HEMC, are evaluated: (i) using techniques that have been applied to proton-proton colliders such as the LHC and extrapolations from it, (ii) using a new technique more applicable to nearly-isochronous HEMC, adding longitudinal and transverse kicks from longitudinal and transverse loss factors. Results from both techniques are presented for HEMC at 10 and 100 TeV center-of-mass energies. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A review is given of the prospects for future colliders and collider physics at the energy frontier. A proof-of-plausibility scenario is presented for maximizing our progress in elementary particle physics by extending the energy reach of hadron and lepton colliders as quickly and economically as might be technically and financially feasible. The scenario comprises 5 colliders beyond the LHC—one each ofe+e−and hadron colliders and three&mgr;+&mgr;−colliders — and is able to hold to the historical rate of progress in the log-energy reach of hadron and lepton colliders, reaching the 1 PeV constituent mass scale by the early 2040’s. The technical and fiscal requirements for the feasibility of the scenario are assessed and relevant long-term R&D projects are identified. Considerations of both cost and logistics seem to strongly favor housing most or all of the colliders in the scenario in a new world high energy physics laboratory. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A focal point for the HEMC’99 workshop was the evaluation of straw-man parameter sets for the acceleration and collider rings of muon colliders at center of mass energies of 10 TeV and 100 TeV. These self-consistent parameter sets are presented and discussed. The methods and assumptions used in their generation are described and motivations are given for the specific choices of parameter values. The assessment of the parameter sets during the workshop is then reviewed and the implications for the feasibility of many-TeV muon colliders are evaluated. Finally, a preview is given of plans for iterating on the parameter sets and, more generally, for future feasibility studies on many-TeV muon colliders. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
