After a brief review of the quark model, we discuss our present knowledge of the spectroscopy of charm and bottom mesons and baryons. We go on to review the lifetimes, semileptonic, and purely leptonic decays of these particles. We conclude with a brief discussionBandDmixing and rare decays. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

A brief description of the Fermilab Photoproduction Experiment E831 or FOCUS is presented. The experiment concentrates on the reconstruction of charm particles. We examine the CDFee&ggr;&ggr;E&slash;Tevent as a candidate for sparticle production. Possible connections to other observables such asRb,&agr;s,b→s&ggr;,cold dark matter are briefly considered, and also implications for present and future data at FNAL and LEP, including the possibility that stops, gluinos and squarks are already being detected at FNAL. An analysis of the resulting Higgsino-like LSP as a cold dark matter candidate gives very encouraging results. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

An atomic parity non-conservation measurement can test the predictions of the standard model for the electron-quark coupling constants. The measurements, performed at very low energies compared to theZ0pole, can be sensitive to physics beyond the standard model. Francium, the heaviest alkali, is a viable candidate for atomic parity violation measurements. The extraction of weak interaction parameters requires a detailed knowledge of the electronic wavefunctions of the atom. Measurements of atomic properties of francium provide data for careful comparisons withab initiocalculations of its atomic structure. The spectroscopy, including energy level location and atomic lifetimes, is carried out using the recently developed techniques of laser cooling and trapping of atoms. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

CERN announced in January 1996 the detection of the first eleven atoms of antimatter ever produced. The experiment was based on a method proposed earlier by S. Brodsky, C. Munger and I. Schmidt, and which furthermore predicted exactly the number of atoms that were detected for the particular conditions of the experiment. The study of antihydrogen affords science the opportunity to continue research on the symmetry between matter and antimatter. In this talk the importance of antihydrogen as a basic physical system is discussed. Different production methods that have been tried in the past are briefly presented, and the method that was used in the CERN experiment is analyzed in detail. It consists in producing antihydrogen by circulating a beam of an antiproton ring through an internal gas target. In the Coulomb field of a nucleus, an electron-positron pair is created, and antihydrogen will form when the positron is created in a bound rather that a continuum state about the antiproton. The theoretical calculation of the production cross section is presented in detail. A discussion of the detection systems used both in the CERN experiment and in another similar experiment that is right now underway at Fermilab are also given. Finally I present and discuss possible future experiments using antihydrogen, including the measurement of the antihydrogen Lamb shift. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

Bdecay sum rules relate exclusiveBsemileptonic decay matrix elements to forwardB-meson matrix elements of operators in HQET. At leading order the operators that occur are theb-quark kinetic energy&lgr;1and chromomagnetic energy&lgr;2.The latter is determined by the measuredB*−Bmass splitting. The derivation of these sum rules is reviewed and perturbative QCD corrections are discussed. A determination of&lgr;1and the energy of the light degrees of freedom in aB-meson,&Lgr;¯,from semileptonicBdecay data is presented. Future prospects for improving these sum rules are discussed. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.
