摘要:
The parameters that characterize the quality of hadron beams in the different accelerators or storage rings most commonly used or in project are reviewed. Because of the absence of a natural damping mechanism, hadron beams require careful manipulations. Some of those are described, in particular the processes used to inject from one machine into another. Among the phenomena that have to be carefully controlled in order to reach the desired performance, special attention is given to space-charge and slow instabilities arising from nonlinearities. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Longitudinal phase-space issues that limit the performance of electron storage rings, especially synchrotron radiation sources, are discussed. Single-bunch operation, a phenomenon that deteriorates single-bunch purity and measures of purity deterioration are given. The importance of the longitudinal emittance and low-alpha operation is also discussed. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The Vlasov equation embodies the smooth-field approximation of the self-consistent equation of motion for charged-particle beams. This framework is fundamentally altered if we include the fluctuating forces that originate from the actual charge granularity. We thereby perform the transition from a reversible description to a statistical mechanics’ description covering also the irreversible aspects of beam dynamics. It will be shown that the macroscopic effects due to the fluctuating forces scale with two distinct quantities: the magnitude of the fluctuating forces, and the system’s temperature anisotropy. These analytical results are used to obtain a quantitative description for the effect of intrabeam scattering. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
In linear colliders preservation of the phase space density of charged particles during acceleration to high energies is essential. In practice, the electromagnetic fields which govern the beam transport may not be sufficiently well understood. This may arise, for example, from magnet and structure alignment and/or manufacturing errors, time-varying electromagnetic fields due to component vibration or imperfect regulation, or at high beam currents, from beam-induced fields. These inadequacies may be overcome using measurements of the beam response. In this report we review such methods for preserving single-bunch beam emittances with experimental results from the Stanford Linear Collider. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The beam-beam interaction is a strong nonlinear force and ultimately limits the luminosity performance of a colliding beam accelerator. The beam dynamics resulting from the beam-beam force has many aspects and is still under active investigation. Ultimately, the useful product of a collider, the integrated luminosity, depends strongly on the characteristics of the beam-beam interactions. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Beam-beam interaction at the collision point of futuree+e−linear colliders imposes strong constraints on the collider parameters. The expected phenomena include bunch deformation due to the Coulomb force, synchrotron radiation (beamstrahlung), coherent pair creation, and incoherent processes. These topics are very briefly summarized. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.
