Recent data on rrr and Krr systems have led to substantial improvements in our knowledge of the light quark meson spectrum. In particular there is now unambiguous evidence for the Al, the H meson is observed and an almost consistent picture of the axial vector mesons exists. Only the D and E meson decays lead to possible difficulties. The r′ and K′ are observed in new experiments. The A3 and L1mesons are also observed so that the L = 2 qq¯ super multiplet is gradually being substantiated. Various other evidence exists for radial excitations ‐A3′, Al′ and Q′, A2′‐although there is clear need for confirmation.

The status of our programmatic study of states containing a strange quark is briefly reviewed. An 11 GeV/c K −p experiment run on the LASS spectrometer at SLAC is discussed and preliminary results presented for several inelastic channels based on approximately one half of the available data sample. In addition, new results utilizing the full statistics of the experiment are presented for the elastic K−r+channel from the K −r +n final state. The well established leading K(890), K(1435), and K(1780) resonances are observed, and clear evidence is presented for a new Jp= 4+resonance at &angupr;2070 MeV. Preliminary results from an energy independent partial wave analysis of these data are presented which display unambiguous evidence for resonant structure in the non‐leading 0+and 1−waves.

We have studied the diffractive production of mesons with natural and unnatural parity at high energy. Partial wave analyses of the Kr and KK¯ systems give evidence for Jp= 4+mesons with masses near 2.06 and 2.00 GeV, respectively. The Breit–Wigner behavior of the resonant phases is clearly seen in the data. Evidence for unnatural parity states comes from a partial wave analysis of the L¯p system. We find three broad states with JP= 2−, 3+and 4−and masses 2.26, 2.32 and 2.49 GeV, respectively. An interpretation in terms of resonances is consistent with the data.

We have investigated Coulomb dissociation (the Primakoff effect) of high energy charged r and K mesons on heavy nuclei. New values for the electromagnetic transition rates G(p−→rg) and G(K−→K−g) have been extracted from the data. Some preliminary data for the Primakoff production of higher meson excitations will also be presented.

Narrow p¯p states were searched for in the reaction r+p→D++(pp) at 10 GeV/c. No states were observed with masses less than 2.3 GeV/c and cross sections greater than 40 nb at the 95% c.1.. In particular, the two previously reported states1at 2020 and 2200 MeV/c were not observed at the 11 s.d. level.

We have carried out a sensitive (≳5 events/nb) search for narrow p¯p states at the BNL Multiparticle Spectrometer. We found no evidence of narrow p¯p states at 2020 and 2200 MeV in the reaction r−p→pr−p¯p at 16 GeV/c. We quote 2 upper limits of ≲3 nb for these states in our data. Based on the cross sections of the CERN W experiment at 12 GeV/c and assuming baryon‐exchange processes for the production, we should have seen ≳5 s signals at 2020 and 2200 MeV.

Experiments in search of narrow states (≲10 MeV) produced in p¯p formation, sometimes called baryonium, are reviewed. First generation experiments which cite evidence for the S‐meson are compared wtih more recent experiments, which do not generally support the claim for its existence. The situation appears to be one in which either the S‐meson does not exist, or perhaps does exist, but in a much less conspicuous form than previously supected.
