摘要:
This talk describes some of the precision electroweak measurements from around the world, namely those related to the Z and W bosons, the top quark mass,sin2&hthinsp;&thgr;Wat NuTeV, and three other fundamental measurements:&agr;−1(mZ2),(g−2)&mgr;at the E821 BNL experiment as well as the atomic parity violation (APV) measurement for the Cesium atom. These and other measurements are set in the context of the Standard Model (SM) and of the electroweak fit predictions. Future prospects for forthcoming experiments are briefly discussed. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
I present an overview of progress in heavy-quark physics, focusing on results frome+e−colliding-beam experiments. The central goal of these experiments is to discover and precisely measureCPasymmetries in a variety of processes in theB-meson system. Together with related quantities, such as the magnitudes of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa elements, these measurements will overconstrain the Standard-Model framework forCPviolation, either confirming this framework or providing evidence for new physics. The heavy-quark physics program also includes many other fascinating processes that do not bear directly onCPviolation but which nevertheless are of great interest. Such processes as electroweak penguin decays, rare hadronicBdecays, andD0−D¯0mixing have sensitivity to new physics or help to sharpen our understanding of physics within the Standard Model. I also discuss the newB-factory accelerators, whose remarkable success should ensure rapid progress in this field. My presentation is intended to highlight some of the most interesting aspects of the subject for nonexperts. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Progress in the study of structure functions in deep inelastic scattering is reviewed. A brief introduction to the formalism and the status of global analyses of parton distributions and their uncertainties is given. The review focuses on recent developments in the following areas: HERA results onF2,FLand charm; the resolution of the CCFR-NMC discrepancy; Tevatron jet cross-sections at different energies; and HERA high-Q2cross-sections and the measurement ofxF3.©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Recent polarized deep-inelastic scattering experiments have demonstrated that all of the components of the nucleon may perhaps contribute to its spin. This conclusion has been obtained through detailed measurements of polarized structure functions and direct measurements of polarized parton distributions. Both of these topics will be presented in this paper. However, there remains some open questions on nucleon spin structure such as the role of gluons and the third twist-2 structure function, the so-called transversity which is still an unknown quantity. The future of these topics in view of upcoming experiments will also be discussed. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A review of measurements of the nucleon elastic form factors is presented along with their interpretation and a brief theoretical background. All available data from Rosenbluth separations and experiments using polarized beams and polarized targets or recoil nucleon polarimeters are summarized. 摘要:
This talk discusses ground and excited states of hadrons that are not explained by the quark model. This includes “extra” states, which are generally interpreted in terms of gluonic degrees of freedom or as multiquark configurations. It also includes “missing” states which are predicted by the quark model but are not yet observed. We concentrate on the more recent advances in this field, giving examples in both the meson and baryon sectors. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
I review arguments for the existence of a critical pointEin the QCD phase diagram as a function of temperatureTand baryon chemical potential &mgr;. I describe how heavy ion collision experiments at the SPS and RHIC can discover the tell-tale signatures of such a critical point, thus mapping this region of the QCD phase diagram. I then review the phenomena expected in cold dense quark matter: color superconductivity and color-flavor locking. I close with a snapshot of ongoing explorations of the implications of recent developments in our understanding of cold dense quark matter for the physics of compact stars. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Parity violation in the scattering of polarized electrons is a unique tool for nuclear and particle physics that is presently being exploited at JLab, Mainz, MIT-Bates, and SLAC. One focus of these experiments is the measurement of the contribution of strange quarks to the elastic form factors of the nucleon. Recently, results on this topic from MIT-Bates and JLab have been reported. Future experiments, motivated by the search for strange form factors as well as testing the Standard Model and measuring the radius of the neutron distribution, are described. ©2000 American Institute of Physics.
