摘要:
We present an introduction to the subjects of emittance and space‐charge effects in charged‐particle beams. This is followed by a discussion of three important topics that are at the frontier of this field. The first is a simple model, describing space‐charge‐induced emittance growth, which yields scaling formulas and some physical explanations for some of the surprising results. The second is a discussion of beam halo, an introduction to the particle‐core model, and a brief summary of its results. The third topic is an introduction to the hypothesis of equipartitioning for collisionless particle beams. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Space charge tune shifts, fast resonance traversals, and current limits are important design issues for low energy, high power circular accelerators. Areas of interest are accumulator rings and fast cycling synchrotrons, and typical applications are for pulsed spallation neutron sources, heavy ion fusion storage ring drivers, and booster injectors for high energy proton and ion facilities. Aspects of the three topics are discussed in the paper. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Measurements were made to check the performance of the CERN high intensity RFQs (RFQ2A and RFQ2B) and assess the validity of the design approach; the study of space charge effects was undertaken in this context. RFQ2A and RFQ2B are 200 mA, 750 keV proton accelerators, operating at 202.56 MHz. Since the beginning of 1993, RFQ2B serves as injector to the CERN 50 MeV Alvarez linac (Linac 2). In 1992, both RFQs were on the test stand to undergo a series of beam measurements, which were compared with computations. The studies concerning the RFQ2A were more detailed and they are reported in this paper. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
A discussion of hadron collider performance parameters is given. A few of those parameters, e.g., beam luminosity, center‐of‐mass energy, beam emittance, and phase space density have important effects relating to beam intensity. Finally, opinions on what research directions are required for improving the luminosity delivered from hadron colliders.(AIP) ©American Institute of Physics

摘要:
The Seventh International Symposium on Heavy Ion Inertial Fusion was held at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory on September 6–9, 1995. The topics covered were the technology of particle accelerators which are capable of achieving beam parameters needed for inertial fusion, advances in solid state laser technology that support the design and development of the U.S. National Ignition Facility and the French Megajoule Project, the technology of ion beam fusion systems, the world-wide progress in fusion energy using a light and heavy ion fusion drivers, the technology of intense ion beam transport and manipulation, and target design.(AIP) ©American Institute of Physics

摘要:
For many years now, Los Alamos National Laboratory has been working to develop a conceptual design of a facility for accelerator production of tritium (APT). The APT accelerator will produce high energy protons which will bombard a heavy metal target, resulting in the production of large numbers of spallation neutrons. These neutrons will be captured by a low‐Ztarget to produce tritium. This paper describes the latest design of a room‐temperature, 1.0 GeV, 100 mA, cw proton accelerator for tritium production. The potential advantages of using superconducting cavities in the high‐energy section of the linac are also discussed and a comparison is made with the baseline room‐temperature accelerator. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Simulation studies of the CERN Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) which take intoconsideration space‐charge forces and high brightness beams are ongoing. A description of how space‐charge and wakefields are included in the simulation code is given. This allows beam particles to be tracking over relatively large distances. A description of how preservation of the small transverse emittance of a high brightness single bunch in the main linac by counteracting the instabilities generated by strong wakefields over the whole length of the linac is given. Also, there is a short summary of the simulations and experiments made with the CLIC test facility bunch compressor as an expample of the space‐charge influence on the bunch length.(AIP) ©American Institute of Physics

摘要:
We review the experimental results of our research on longitudinal dynamics of space‐charge dominated beams. The topics include three recent experiments. In the longitudinal compression experiments, we investigated the longitudinal density profiles of bunched beams. In the space‐charge wave experiments, we studied the behavior of localized perturbations as fast and slow waves in beams. The resistive‐wall instability experiments were designed to measure the growth of perturbations in a dissipative environment, and the damages to beam quality. On‐going and future work is also discussed. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The Maryland Transport Experiment employs a beam of low energy electrons to study, on a scaled basis, the nonlinear physics of space‐charge‐dominated transport which is important to a range of accelerator systems. Several series of experiments are discussed, which have investigated significant aspects of both the transverse and longitudinal physics, along with the generally high level of agreement which has been attained in comparisons to theory and simulation. ©1996 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The basic design principles for an efficient low energy beam transport (LEBT) system for high brightness ion beams are discussed. A combination of electrostatic quadrupole lenses and a short einzel lens is shown to satisfy a very stringent matching condition for a radio frequency quadrupole accelerator. Electrostatic LEBT schemes are expected to work well, especially for short pulsed (<50&mgr;s) beams, with currents of around 30mA at a beam voltage of around 35kV.(AIP)American Institute of Physics
