摘要:
A high luminosity polarized Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) can provide precise and complete data essential to the ultimate understanding of the microscopic structure of matter. With a luminosity in excess of1033⋅1/A&hthinsp;cm−2&hthinsp;s−1and a variable center-of-mass energy in the range of 30 to 100 GeV, EIC would be a powerful new microscope to probe the partonic structure of matter. The scientific highlights motivating the machine are summarized. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

Quantum chromodynamics, or QCD, is the modern theory of the strong interaction. It is a precisely defined theory, that cleanly embodies a few profound concepts. Its fundamental predictions have been verified experimentally with remarkable completeness and rigor. In many ways, QCD is our most perfect theory of Nature. It is, however, far from being a closed or finished story. Its implications are wide-ranging, and there are many potential applications that remain to be achieved. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

We discuss plans for Jefferson Lab to explore GPDs in hard exclusive reactions. A broad experimental program is proposed with up to 11 GeV polarized electron beams. Such an upgraded CEBAF, with high precision, and high performance detectors, will be a suitable place to study deep virtual production of mesons and photons in the range ofQ2<8&hthinsp;GeV/c2.These studies are proposed as a key program for the Hall B CLAS detector. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The major limitations on reaching the maximum luminosity for an electron ion collider are discussed in application to the ring-ring and linac-ring colliders. It is shown that with intensive electron cooling the luminosity of1033&hthinsp;cm−2&hthinsp;s−1is feasible for both schemes for the center-of-mass collider energy above approximately 15 GeV. Each scheme has its own pros and cons. The ring-ring collider is better supported by the current accelerator technology while the linac-ring collider suggests unique features for spin manipulations of the electron beam. The article addresses a general approach to a choice of collider scheme and parameters leaving details for other conference publications dedicated to particular aspects of the ring-ring and linac-ring colliders. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.
