摘要:
The results of recent measurements of proton‐proton total cross‐sections are presented. A plausible extrapolation to higher energies of the cross‐sections of other hadrons is discussed.

摘要:
The information obtained in the last two years on high energy proton‐proton elastic scattering is summarized. Then the implications on the impact parameter description of proton‐proton collisions and on the inelastic mechanism which drives the rise of the total cross‐section are briefly outlined.

摘要:
The theoretical reasoning that leads to the prediction of, among others, total cross section rising like (ℓn s)2is reviewed. Briefly, relativistic kinematics dictate the dependence on longitudinal momentum of particles produced in the pionization region, and leads to a factor of ℓn s in the integrated cross section. Unitarity in the t‐channel then amplifies this ℓn s to be a power of s, divided possibly by a power of ℓn s. This power of s is a realization of the strongly absorptive potential with a coupling constant increasing with energy, and thus the Froissart bound for total cross sections is saturated. Many other results, concerning in particular the phases of the scattering amplitudes in the forward direction and differential cross sections for both elastic and inelastic diffractive scattering, are obtained at the same time.In order to make quantitative comparison with experimental data, past and future, we describe a simple model of hadron scattering. When applied to the elastic scattering of pp,pp, &pgr;±p, and K±p, this model describes reasonably well existing data beyond 20GeV. From the resulting parameters, quantitative predictions about these processes are given in detail up to the highest energy that may become available from accelerators in this century, namely 1.5TeV on 1.5TeV. These considerations are also extended to inelastic diffractive scattering without spin‐parity exchange.A number of problems related to increasing total cross sections, some unsolved, are discussed.

摘要:
After reviewing the evidence for weak simultaneous occurrence of one exclusive and one inclusive pomeron, experiments are described that seek two exclusive pomerons, as well as two exclusive and one inclusive. We discuss the theoretical basis for expecting weak but indefinite pomeron recurrence as the energy increases and outline a systematic rapidly‐converging fireball expansion that brings order to a confusing picture. The widely‐employed two‐component model of particle production corresponds to the two leading terms. An experimentally meaningful concept of “bare” pomeron emerges naturally from the fireball expansion, as does the notion of pomeron renormalization and splitting (the schizophrenic pomeron).

Utilizing the fact that the opaqueness (or the total cross section) of hadrons increases with incoming energy, we propose a way by which the velocity profile of the stuff inside a nucleon or an atomic nucleus can be measured.

摘要:
A series of experiments on proton‐proton inelastic scattering were performed at NAL and ISR. The four‐momentum transfer in these experiments ranges from .01 to 1.75 (GeV/c)2and the equivalent laboratory momentum ranges from 50 to 2,000 (GeV/c). The results clearly show the existence of two components. For one of these the cross section d2&sgr;/dtdMx2scales as 1/s. For small Mx2a second component is present. Its cross section is independent of energy and is bounded by3.2 < &sgr;diff < 4.7 mb.

摘要:
Triple Regge predictions for diffractive proton events (pp ⇒ p + anything) are reviewed. The data appears to be in splendid agreement with this formalism but is as yet too pauce to allow quantitative fits. The published analyses make simplifying assumptions which are not justified by theory and/or experiment. The inclusive properties of the other particles produced in diffractive proton events disagree with fragmentation (nova) model predictions but appear very consistent with the multiperipheral suggestion that Pomeron proton scattering has similar inclusive structure to proton proton scattering.
