摘要:
Motivations for expecting supersymmetry to appear at energies ≳1 TeV are reviewed, and it is emphasized that the lightest supersymmetric particle is an ideal candidate for cold dark matter. Experimental and cosmological constraints on supersymmetric dark matter are reviewed, and the prospects for indirect or direct detection are discussed. Finally, the potential implications of a Higgs boson weighing about 115 GeV are summarized. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The goal of these lectures is to provide an insight on topics going from supersymmetry representations to supergravity, stressing on techniques useful to construct and understand phenomenological theories. Historical aspects are not considered. Supergravity is shortly touched, giving before an account of the vierbein formalism of gravity. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Particle physics models where there are large hidden extra dimensions are currently on the focus of an intense activity. The main reason is that these large extra dimensions may come with a TeV scale for quantum gravity (or string theory) which leads to a plethora of new observable phenomena in colliders as well as in other areas of particle physics. Those new dimensions could be as large as millimeters implying deviations of the Newton’s law of gravity at these scales. Intending to provide a basic introduction to this fast developing area, we present a general overview of theories with large extra dimensions. We center our discussion on models for neutrino masses, high dimensional extensions of the Standard Model and gauge coupling unification. We discuss the recently proposed technic of splitting fermion wave functions on a tick brane which may solve the problem of a fast proton decay and produce fermion mass hierarchies without invoking extra global symmetries. Randall-Sundrum model and some current trends are also commented. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
Basics of some topics on perturbative and non-perturbative string theory are reviewed. After a mathematical survey of the Standard Model of particle physics and GUTs, the bosonic string kinematics for the free case and with interaction is described. The effective action of the bosonic string and the spectrum is also discussed. Five perturbative superstring theories and their spectra is briefly outlined. Calabi-Yau three-fold compactifications of heterotic strings and their relation to some four-dimensional physics are given. T-duality in closed and open strings are surveyed. D-brane definition is provided and some of their properties and applications to brane boxes configurations, in particular to the cube model are discussed. Finally, non-perturbative issues like S-duality, M-theory, F-theory and basics of their non-perturbative Calabi-Yau compactifications are considered. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
We describe the different components of the present energy of the universe starting from the well established radiation and luminous matter, following with the dark baryonic matter determined by primordial nucleosynthesis, the likely cold dark matter with its theoretical candidates, the sure but not yet defined hot dark matter represented by neutrinos and the evidence of dark energy given by cosmological constant, vacuum energy or quintessence. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
This brief lecture series discusses how our current understanding of chiral symmetry may be tested more globally in high-energy nuclear collisions by suitable extraction of pionic observables. After briefly recalling the general features of chiral symmetry, we focus on the SU(2) linear &sgr; model and show how a semi-classical mean-field treatment makes it possible to calculate its statistical properties, including the chiral phase diagram. Subsequently, we consider scenarios of relevance to high-energy collisions and discuss the features of the ensuing non-equilibrium dynamics and the associated characteristic signals. Finally, we illustrate how the presence of vacuum fluctuations or the inclusion of strangenesss may affect the results quantitatively. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
After a brief history of heavy quarks, I will discuss charm, bottom, and top quarks in turn. For each one, I discuss its first observation, and then what we have learned about production, hadronization, and decays - and what these have taught us about the underlying physics. I will also point out remaining open issues. For this series of lectures, the charm quark will be emphasized. It is the first of the heavy quarks, and its study is where many of the techniques and issues first appeared. Only very brief mention is made of CP violation in the bottom-quark system since that topic is the subject of a separate series of lectures by Gabriel Lopez. As the three quarks are reviewed, a pattern of techniques and lessons emerges. These are identified, and then briefly considered in the context of anticipated physics signals of the future; e.g., for Higgs and SUSY particles. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
The purpose of this talk is to show one of the next future experiment in diffractive Physics which will be installed at theDØexperiment at Tevatron/Fermilab for run II, and the importance for Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) as the theory of the strong interactions. The apparatus that we have developed is the Forward Proton Detector (FPD) to be introduced on the beam line of the Tevatron at both sides of theDØdetector. The FPD is composed by a set of Roman Pots as we will see in the text below. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.

摘要:
An overview of the present status ofJ/&psgr;suppression inpAand nucleus-nucleus interactions is presented. In both cases, model predictions are summarized and compared to the data. The “anomalous”J/&psgr;suppression inPb+Pbcollisions is discussed in some detail. Predictions are also shown for quarkonium suppression at collider energies. ©2001 American Institute of Physics.
