摘要:
With the closing of theEinsteinandEXOSATeras, the characteristics of stellar x‐ray emission are now fairly well understood, but the more fundamental reasons why there is any x‐ray emission at all is not at all well understood. Future x‐ray missions will have to play a key role in unraveling this mystery.

摘要:
X‐ray timing studies on neutron stars and black holes need large collecting areas, ≫10 m2, to permit millisecond and submillisecond studies. Physical processes near neutron star surfaces and general relativistic effects could be seen. The key requirement is collecting many photons rapidly, by viewing bright sources with a large aperture. Lack of a requirement for X‐ray mirrors permits rapid realization of such a capability.

摘要:
The importance for future high‐energy astrophysics space missions to incoporate the study of gamma emission from black hole candidates as a major component their scientific goals is discussed. Such gamma emission can provide excellent diagnostics for black hole astrophysics and is particularly sensitivity to the accretion disk phenomena. (AIP)

摘要:
This paper starts with a brief review of the status of our knowledge of the X‐ray properties of normal galaxies after theEinstein Observatorysurvey. It then summarizes some of the currently open issues on this subject, and addresses how substantial increases in sensitivity, angular resolution, bandwidth, spectral capabilities, and the capability to do timing observations are needed to further our knowledge of the X‐ray properties of galaxies. It concludes by proposing a large throughput X‐ray lunar observatory as a goal for the high‐energy astrophysical community, but this should be preceded by a series of increasingly ambitious missions.

摘要:
X‐ray observations and the properties of Active Galactic Nuclei are re ed and the requirements for 21st century observations are discussed. To obtain the data necessary to directly study evolution, determine redshifts, study accretion disks and determine characteristic timescales of variability requires del E about 100 ev, a collecting at E about 6 kev of ≳ 3000 cm(2), a broad energy range of 0.1–10 kev, good spatial resolution (<10‘) and the capacity for long observations (e.g., a non‐low earth orbit).
