摘要:
When a powerful laser beam is focussed on a free electron the acceleration of the latter is so violent that the interaction is nonlinear. We review the prospects for experimental studies of nonlinear electrodynamics of a single electron, with emphasis on the most accessible effect, non‐linear Thomson scattering. We also speculate on the possibility of laboratory studies of a novel effect related to the Hawking radiation of a black hole.

摘要:
We review the progress made on several schemes for acceleration in a plasma medium. The beat wave accelerator is becoming fairly well developed with recent advances made on theoretical, computational, and experimental fronts. Progress on three new concepts, the surfatron, the plasma wakefield, and the plasma grating or rippled plasma accelerator is also described.

摘要:
In this paper we present the first detailed study of the excitation of high phase velocity plasm waves by colinear optical mixing. The plasma wave frequency and wavenumber, hence the phase velocity, are directly measured using Thomson scattering. The amplitude of the plasma wave and therefore the longitudinal electric field is inferred from the magnitude of the Thomson scattered light. For a modest laser intensity of ∼1013W/cm2in each frequency, the excited space‐charge plasma wave has measured longitudinal electric fields of the order 1 GeV/m, in reasonable agreement with the fluid theory.

摘要:
Electromagnetic effects excited by intense relativistic electron beams in plasmas are investigated using a two‐dimensional particle code. The simulations with dense beams show large magnetic fields excited by the Weibel instability as well as sizeable electromagnetic radiation over a significant range of frequencies. The possible relevance of beam plasma instabilities to the laser acceleration of particles is briefly discussed.
