Summary:The effects of both task-induced activation and gender on electroencephalographic (EEG) indices of cortical activity were examined using a verbal and a spatial task previously found to produce differential hemispheric activation patterns across genders with regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) measures (e.g., Gur et al., 1982). EEG was recorded from 16 men and 14 women during baseline (resting with eyes open) and during each task condition. The regional distributions of two EEG indices, beta (13–32 Hz) and alpha (8–13 Hz), were examined. The results indicated that both measures were sensitive to hemispheric task activation effects. In addition, females had higher baseline levels of activity and greater hemispheric asymmetry of activation for the verbal and spatial tasks. These findings are similar to previous rCBF findings and suggest that EEG and rCBF measures reflect comparable aspects of cortical activity.

Summary:Recent preliminary findings by Williams et al. of increased platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity after prednisone administration and anecdotal reports of associated behavior changes were replicated in a planned study. Children in a standard chemotherapy program for acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) that requires periodic steroid administration were studied. Systematic assessments of platelet MAO activity, mood, behavior, and cognitive–motor functioning were conducted prior to, during, and after prednisone treatment. Increased platelet MAO activity correlated with deterioration in mood and behavior (resembling atypical depression), but had no effect on cognitive–motor functions.

Summary:Postpoliomyelitis syndrome (PPS) is an increasingly recognized phenomenon characterized by late-onset weakness, pain, and fatigue. Psychiatric and cognitive disturbances have been noted in postpoliomyelitis patients, but the relationship of these symptoms to PPS is unknown. We examined postpoliomyelitis patients with and without PPS using objective neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric procedures. Our results suggest that disturbances of mood were common and that subtle cognitive deficits also occurred in postpoliomyelitis patients. However, patients with PPS did not have greater depression or cognitive deficits compared to postpoliomyelitis patients without PPS.

Summary:There is increasing evidence incriminating the right paralimbic areas in the pathogenesis of panic disorder. We present the case of a 32-year-old patient with a right paralimbic grade 2 astrocytoma whose only symptomatology consisted of episodic autonomic and experiential phenomena consistent with a diagnosis of a panic disorder. We also attempt to integrate the manifestations of panic disorder with a theoretical model of the functional role of paralimbic areas.

Summary:We present a patient with a severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, which was characterized by obsessive slowness and visual dysfunction, who had an abnormal single photon emission computed tomography study withN-isopropyl-p-[123I]iodoamphetamine. The initial study demonstrated decreased tracer deposition in the right basal ganglia and adjacent anterior right temporal lobe. After major symptom reduction by psychopharmacological therapy, a follow-up study demonstrated a return to normalcy.

Summary:A patient with a history of both idiopathic Parkinson's disease and bipolar disorder is described. As the patient became manic her parkinsonism improved and she developed an athetoid movement disorder. The case is discussed in light of dopaminergic theories of psychosis and movement disorders.

Summary:A 24-year-old man involved in a single vehicle motor accident sustained a massive left temporoparietal compound depressive skull fracture. Although initially suffering aphasic symptoms, repeated screening testing at 5 years postaccident found no evidence of aphasia. Two years after the accident, the patient developed a chronic somatic delusion and requested to have his eye removed. The relationship between brain injury and psychosis is explored, as well as the ethical dilemma faced when presented with a delusional patient requesting surgical mutilation.
