The author describes a well-functioning visiting nurse program as sponsored by a community and a health department, under the direction of the local physicians. This type of agency is being adopted more and more by communities, and may be predicted to become a necessity because of rising hospital costs, an increasing number of aged and chronically incapacitated persons along with a shortage of physicians.
