The fetal-placental-maternal axis has come under scrutiny in recent years. The placenta, as an essential organ of transfer from mother to fetus, “elaborates, modifies, transfers, and stores many hormones, enzymes, immunoproteins, and other simpler substances” (Fort). Obviously, then, the placenta may have an important role insofar as the health of the fetus is concerned if the maternal side of the axis is deranged by illness—the complications of pregnancy. These matters have now come under study because new technics permit certain studies on maternal urine and serum, the amniotic fluid and the fetal response to drugs and maternal exercise.
