Accounts of traffic and highway accidents fill the newspapers. Now are added riots and their accompanying injuries. The emergency rooms of hospitals are busy places these days. Life often hangs upon doing just the right thing at the proper moment, and again upon not doing too much or too quickly. This Symposium provides the rules for management of the injured in the emergency room.

摘要:

This valuable review of infections in pregnancy summarizes current knowledge of transplacental transmission of infectious agents and their possible effects upon the fetus. Not only is attention given to prenatal infection but also to the teratogenetic effects, especially of viral infections. The latter especially is an area of intensive investigation. No doubt much information will be gained within the next few years, which makes this review of today's knowledge especially pertinent.

The authors emphasize that contrary to common belief, depression is not only a characteristic of one phase of manic depressive psychosis but of other conditions as well. It is a not unusual symptom in other psychoses, in psychoneurosis and in “normal” persons upon occasion. Lack of recognition of depression when accompanied by physical symptoms may have, at times, serious consequences.

Anyone with historical perspective recognizes that morality is not an immutable attribute of society. This penetrating analysis of today's social changes has profound medical implications. No matter what the reader's reaction, favorable or unfavorable, he cannot deny that relationships—interpersonal, within the family or the group—in a changing social pattern may be of such depth as to cause psychosomatic or psychiatric disease. The author views the probable alterations in moral values which will accompany a technologic society whose threshold we have already crossed.
