This report reviews the factors related to prognosis in a large number of patients, chiefly children, with acute bacterial meningitis. The prognosis was poorer in infants, in those with pneumococcal meningitis, and in those with impaired consciousness at the time of admission. Duration of illness and previous antimicrobial therapy were not found to be prognostically significant.

This imported pest by now infests large rural areas in the South. It is known to have a very allergenic venom, and anaphylactoid reactions occur from stings as described in these case reports. Such reactions may occur quickly and be severe within minutes of the sting.

Reversion of arrhythmias by direct current has become established in the armamentarium of the management of heart disease. It is used daily in many hospitals across the country, and by Physicians' Assistants let it be noted, not uncommonly as a lifesaving measure. The author reviews the indications for such management.

The author describes the profile of laboratory determinations which can be obtained by study of the amniotic fluid in predicting gestational maturity. This may be important in the management of the pregnant woman as term approaches, especially if the menstrual history is unreliable.

Though urinary retention is quite common in frankly psychotic patients, those described here do not present overt psychiatric disease. Yet all responded to psychiatric management. Patients of this category demand recognition and classification to avoid needless and fruitless surgical procedures. The proven contractions of the perineal muscles offer a clue to the pathophysiology of this condition in face of a normal bladder.

With increasing longevity and improved surgical technics, patients cured of one cancer are living to develop other malignancies at a later time. Examples of this are being met with increasing frequency, an important diagnostic matter—to avoid the diagnosis of metastasis and thus to deprive the patient of a second cure.
