AbstractTwo early phases of deformation preceded the development of the major NE‐SW‐trending folds, including the Appin Fold. The earliest recognized structures include small folds, lineations and inclusion trails in garnet porphyroblasts. The dominant schistosity and mineral lineation was developed during the second phase of deformation, associated with the formation of similar folds and tectonic banding, under garnet grade conditions over much of the area. The later‐formed major folds are associated with low grade retrogressive metamorphism and crenulation and fracture cleavage formation. These folds are concentric folds and have associated tectonic slides producing low grade cataclastic schists. On the basis of fold style and sequence and metamorphic grade there is a great similarity between the structures in the Dalradian rocks of the Ballappel Foundation and those of the Iltay

AbstractLithostratigraphical and structural mapping of the Taff Gorge area, Glamorgan, has revealed a number of E‐W trending folds and thrusts. These were developed during the early stages of the Hercynian deformation as a result of an approximately N‐S principal compressive strain. Coeval with the folding, a conjugate set of sub‐vertical wrench faults, symmetrical about the principal compressive strain, divided the area into tectonic blocks and to some extent controlled the progressive development of folds and thrusts within the individual blocks. Later Hercynian deformation gave rise firstly to oblique‐slip and finally to dip‐slip movement on the faults.The lithological transition between the Old Red Sandstone and Carboniferous Limestone is described in detail, including the diagenetic history of the limestones. Marine horizons are shown to be present within the dominantly fluviatile Old Red Sandstone, and the base of the Carboniferous Limestone is defined at the base of the lowest limestone of the continuous marine sequence. Studies of spores, macroplants, conodonts and brachiopods indicate that the whole of the Upper Old Red Sandstone and Lower Limestone Shale in the Taff Gorge are of Tourna

AbstractLewisian gneisses, Moinian and Dalradian sediments, and dolerites have been deformed and metamorphosed under Amphibolite Fades conditions. The metamorphic climax, with the growth of kyanite and staurolite, occurred after the cessation of the second deformational episode and before the onset of the third. Plagioclase growth ceased at or about the time of kyanite and staurolite nucleation.Metamorphic effects become less to the south and southeast while the most advanced stages occur around Inver. A single heat pulse appears to be not directly related to any structure.

AbstractThe recent paper by Dr. N. R. Page (1972) proposes a time scale for Pleistocene events in East Anglia and southwest Britain which most workers on this subject find incredible and which results in a suggested correlation with other regions, particularly the English Midlands, which completely negates the many years of patient work of stratigraphers and palaeontologists. This paper is intended to show that the claims to the absolute ages of the East Anglian deposits cannot be sustained and that the resulting correlations with the Pleistocene of other parts of Britain and abroad are quite unacceptable.
