摘要:
AbstractThe Wyresdale Tunnel was driven through Roeburndale Grit Group sediments in the western Bowland Fells. An Arnsbergian age for the strata is confirmed in a palynological study. The tunnel provided a section through a prograding delta front sequence, and proved the Roeburndale Grit Group to be much thicker than previously recorded. Syndepositional instability within the deltaic sediments is illustrated by slumps and debris slides. A comparison is made with modern deltas. It is suggested that the regional variation in sediment thickness is tectonically controlled.

摘要:
AbstractThe Brownstones form the highest Lower Old Red Sandstone in South Wales and the Welsh Borderlands. Sections from the Brecon Beacons of Central South Wales consist of laterally extensive sheets of interbedded sandstone and siltstone. Facies sequence A consists of parallel laminated sheet sandstones and siltstones and is interpreted as a sandy sheetflood and distal muddy floodflat association. Facies sequence B comprises sheet sandstones composed of multistorey channel fills, small calcrete‐clast filled channels and massive siltstones with thin interbedded sandstones. This sequence is interpreted as low sinuosity channel deposits merging laterally and downslope into a muddy flood‐basin, with calcrete clasts infilling intrabasinal channel systems. Facies sequence C consists of multistorey sandstones and is interpreted as a proximal low sinuosity channel system. The Brownstones of the Brecon Beacons formed on an extensive alluvial plain with low sinuosity sand‐bed channels merging downslope into sheetfloods and muddy floodflats, in a system broadly analogous to that of the Eyre Basin of South Aust

摘要:
AbstractThe structure of the Dalradian rocks of the Banffshire coast has been re‐examined. It is shown that D1structures face upwards along the entire section and the major Boyndie Syncline (Sutton and Watson 1956) must also be of D1, age and not D3as proposed by Johnson (1962). D2structures are developed in the west, most strongly in the Portsoy Group and Cowhythe Gneiss where they may be related to the Portsoy Thrust (Elles 1931). East of the Cowhythe Gneiss D2structures are not developed but D3structures are of local importance. Porphyroblast growth is considered to be post‐D1, pre‐D3related to the ‘active’ D2deformation in the west (Barrovian) and to the ‘static’ D2interval in the east (Buchan). The wider implications of these conclusions for Dalradian structure are brief

AbstractFaunal lists for 17 sections in the Overton Formation are presented. Faunal diversity appears to increase towards the formations base while faunal dominance appears to increase towards its top.
