摘要:
Normative data for 144 psychiatric inpatients was collected for the Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation (BaFPE) Task Oriented Assessment (TOA). Five facilities in Western New York and Ontario, Canada participated in this Study during 1987-88. Standard scores are presented for patients evaluated within 14 days of admission (N = 96) and patients evaluated after 14 days (N = 48).

摘要:
Chronic schizophrenics are difficult to motivate due to volitional and psychomotor problems. These problems have been attributed to proprioceptive and vestibular deficits, long term institutionalization, and an inactive life style. This research contributes to the knowledge gained from previous studies which compared purposeful activities (added purpose or dual motive) with pure exercise (single purpose) to determine which is more motivating to the doer. The results supported two hypotheses, that chronic schizophrenics (N = 18) performing arm rotations with a ribbon stick (added purpose activity) would do significantly more rotations (t = 3.64, p = .001) and perform for a significantly longer period of time (t = 3.23, p = .003) when compared with performing arm rotations without the ribbon stick (single purpose activity). Recommendations are made for replicating this study in other mental health settings and with other populations such as the mentally retarded and the elderly.

摘要:
An understanding of the effects of the presence of others in the treatment environment on the client is important to the field of occupational therapy. This study investigated the impact of social facilitation by comparing individuals working in the presence of another on a work hardening task to individuals working on the same type of task alone. The dependent variable was the quanitity of work completed in a nut-and-bolt assembly task. The sample of 24 male and 24 female non-occupational therapy undergraduate students enrolled in a Midwestern university were randomly assigned to either group. Data analysis indicated that individuals who performed the task in the presence of another had significantly higher assembly scores than those who completed the task in seclusion, F (1,44) = 13.4, p<.01. Analysis also revealed significant differences between the genders, F (1,44) = 23.6, p<1.01, with males completing more assemblies than females. Implications of this study to the practice of occupational therapy and knowledge base of social facilitation are discussed, and suggestions for further research are presented.

摘要:
Although immigrant women constitute a relatively large sector of Canadian society, the occupational therapy literature offers neither an analysis of their mental health needs nor any specific approach to addressing these. Because of this group's diversity on a number of dimensions, this paper focuses on non-English speaking, working-class immigrant women. The Model of Human Occupation is employed as a theoretical framework for analyzing their major mental health needs in the areas of work and family life. The principal implications of the moddel for direct and indirect occupational therapy involvement with these women are also discussed.

摘要:
A review of Occupational Therapy literature on the treatment of schizophrenia identified four loosely defined treatment categories: (1) sensory integration, (2) activity groups, (3) social skills training, and (4) living skills training. From available data is appears that sensory integration therapy has been able to improve the motivation and affect of schizophrenic patients and structured activity programs can contribute to a reduction in positive symptomatology. Social and living skills training show promise as treatment methods to promote the community functioning of this population. A future need to establish which schizophrenic patients and what schizophrenic symptomatology respond to different types of treatment is identified.
