Recent research has clearly demonstrated that bipolar disorder occurs during childhood and adolescence.The older the bipolar disorder adolescent is, the more the clinical features are similar to the adult type of the disorder. In younger children, in those with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and in adolescents, conduct disorders are frequently associated with bipolar disorder. Thus, the question emerges regarding whather attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or conduct disorders may be developmental precursors of bipolar disorder or real comorbid conditions. Children and young people under 18 years old should no longer be regarded as incompetent to give or withhold consent in decisions involving their health care.Recent research suggests a functional test of cognitive and emotional maturity, rather than a strict age cut-off point. Large-scale epidemiological surveys have reported that the prevalence of mental disorders is low in the elderly, with the exception of cognitive impairment. It is therefore not surprising that dementia continues to be the major focus of epidemiological attention. A particularly hot area is protection factors for Alzheimer's disease, in particular oestrogen replacement therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs and a high level of education. Depression is the second major focus of epidemiological research, with particular interest in the issue of whether the prevalence of depression really is lower in the elderly or whether the finding is a methodological artefact. Alzheimer's disease is a complex genetic disorder with at least four genes and several environmental factors that increase disease risk.Recent candidate gene studies have failed to detect any new widely replicated genetic effect.
