For each young person, the impact of cataclysmic life events is a unique blend of the event itself, the characteristics of the individual sufferer, family and cultural dynamics, service delivery and the social attitudes in which they are all set.These factors are examined in relation to models of childhood mourning and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Treatment in child abuse and neglect is increasingly directed to specific risks and to sequelae of sexual abuse in particular, although there is little reported treatment outcome research.Recognition that most child abuse and neglect is a manifestation of dysfunctional parent-child interaction has led to growing interest in attachment issues, and hazards in the doctor-parent-child relationship are increasingly recognized.

Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are associated with significant mortality and morbidity rates, and patients frequently relapse.Successful treatment must address the physical consequences of pathological eating behavior as well as the psychological and neuropathophysiological underpinnings. These disorders are increasingly difficult to adequately treat in today's managed care environment. This review highlights recent developments in the search for the biological substrate and treatment of these disorders.
