Prenctice and Cai recently introduced and studied the function C defined as the covariance function of the two marginal counting process martingales of a pair of dependent survival times (T1,T2). They show that the function C together with the marginal distributions determines the joint survival functionFof (T1,T2). In this note we show how the key characterizing equation of Prentice and Cai yields a formula for the covariance of T1andT2in termsof the marginal mean residual life functions and C. The resulting formula generalizes a formula for the variance of a one‐dimensional random variable Tdueto Pyke (1965). We also explore several generalizations of the covariance formula, and obtain a valid k‐dimensional version of the Prentice and Cai form

Local data are required at short intervals of time mainly for undertaking regional development projects on ascertaining area‐wise socio‐economic requirements, proper devolution of funds and resources from central pools and allocation of legislative seats. A census is an infrequent source for them and is also incomprehensive. Official records and registers are a second source but are generally inadequate. Sample surveys are a recognized third alternative. But even for large total sample sizes, when numerous local areas are involved, many are not represented well enough in samples. Consequently, for totals of small areas classical survey estimates turn out inefficient having large mean square errors admitting uselessly wide confidence intervals. Improved estimation procedures however are rapidly emerging based on postulated models which encourage borrowing strength from samples outside local areas and from past data. The possible uniqueness of the infinite cluster in percolation theory has been a subject of research for more then three decades. A number of important results have been proved in the last eight years and most of the question posed thirty years ago are answered nowadays. In this review paper, I shall give an account on the history of the subject plus recent developments. My goal is not only to mention the main results, but also to give some idea of the methods of proofs which are involved. I also discuss some applications and open problems.

This paper discusses the estimation of a parameter in an autoregressive model with infinite variance. A recursive estimation procedure based on minimizing the prediction errors is provided. It is also shown that the model reference adaptive system estimate for an AR (1) model given in Aase (1983) is a special case.

A method for estimating word frequencies on the basic's of lexical dispersion data that makes use of some results in occupancy theory is outlined.
