SummaryThis paper is concerned with the problem of determining those values of the parameters Z, Aiαi(i = 1, 2, …, h) which provide a best fit of the formto the observed values fs= f(ts) (s = 1, 2, …, n) in the sense that the sumis a minimum.Two iterative numerical techniques for the solution of this problem are discussed. The first, a variable gradient method, converges rapidly but involves a relatively large amount of computation; the second involves less computation but converges less rapidly. It is shown that by application of a suitable acceleration technique to the second method, its convergence is made as rapid as that of the first.SamenvattingDit artikel behandelt het probleem der bepaling van die waarden der parameters Z, Ai, αi(i = 1, 2,…, h), die de beste benadering geven van de vormaan de waargenomen waarden fs= f(ts) (s = 1, 2, …, n) in die zin, dat de someen minimum is.Twee iteratief numerieke technieken voor de oplossing van dit probleem worden besproken. SamenvattingZoals bekend is het kwadraat van de correlatie‐coëfficiënt bij regressie‐analyse een onzuivere schatting van zijn tegenhanger in de populatie. Deze onzuiverheid wordt afgeleid tot op de orde 1/T, waarbij T het aantal waarnemingen is. SummaryThe analysis deals with the ratio of actual to predicted prices of building projects for a big city in the Netherlands in the period 1946–1953. These forecasts had been made by the city's civil servants as a guide to building policy. It appears that the ratio of actual to predicted prices was of the order of 0.85 on the average, which implies a tendency to overestimate the actual prices to be paid. This ratio has an average which is closer to 1 for large projects than for small ones, and the standard deviation around the mean is smaller for large projects. SummaryIn an office a number of employees do the same kind of work. The jobs arrive at random and the holding time is exponential; the queuediscipline is first in, first served. The mean queuelength is shortened by work done in overtime according to the rule that on every day on which the total number of jobs exceeds a certain number N, one or more extra hours of work will be done. The distribution of the number of jobs in the office, the mean value of this number and the probability of overtime are given. The model is illustrated with a numerical example.
