摘要:
SummaryThis paper gives an exposition of the convention, introduced by D. VAN DANTZIG in of indicating randomness by underlining the relevant symbols. This method of distinguishing between random variables (or elements) and non‐random ones serves a multiple purpose. It saves symbols and may be applied to symbols which have been introduced first in a non‐random quality. It clearly marks the line between measure theory and probability theory and, in statistics, between descriptive and stochastic models. This underlining notation has proved to be very useful during its nearly twenty years of use in Holland and many Dutch authors use it in their publications. The present description of the rules of this convention is meant to facilitate the reading of these papers and to deepen the understanding of the merits of this notat

摘要:
SummaryA sequential two‐sample grouped rank test with two possible decisions (onesided testing) developed by WILCOXON, RHODES and BRADLEY (1963) is generalized to a sequential test with three possible decisions (two‐sided testing) using a method given by SOBEL and WALD (1949). An auxiliary table with some moments concerning LEHMANN'S alternatives for the normal distribution, is given in order to facilitate the choice of the alternative hypothe

摘要:
SummaryThis paper deals with an examination of the well‐known Project Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT). Every activity duration is supposed to have a gamma distribution whose parameter values are determined from the optimistic, the most likely, and the pessimistic estimate of the duration. The expectation and the variance of the earliest event times are computed according to a method given by CHARLES E. CLARK in reference 2.One can then estimate the risk that a PERT planning, which is essentially a planning according to the critical path method, will be infeasible.During the examination it was found that errors in the pessimistic estimates may have serious consequence

摘要:
SummaryMost of a typical log‐normal curve lies very close to two straight lines, namely the tangents at its points of inflection. This holds good for nearly all the rising part of the curve and for most of the top half beyond the maximum. When loge(t – to) is normally distributed with standard deviation s̀, whether the whole curve can be observed or not, s̀, to, the mean, the mode and the area under the whole curve can be derived from the triangle formed by these two tangents and the base line. The triangle also provides a simple test of goodness‐of‐fit. The corresponding inflection triangles of two other skew distributions are investigated in outline namely a chi2(or gamma) distribution and one arising in Brownian movement or random walk in one dimension with drift. These are compared with the log‐normal one. The normal distribution and its inflection triangle are given as a limiting case of the log‐normal one and it is shown that the curve on the cover of Statistica Neerlandica cannot be a normal one.The application is to the extrapolation problem in heart dye‐dilution curves, which record the distribution of passage times of an indicator through the lungs and heart. The usual semi‐log extrapolation for determining the area under the complete curve is discussed critically; it is shown how the inflection triangle provides a simpler procedure that is probably more accurate. The general formulae, an outline of the application and numerical tables for 0

摘要:
SummaryLet be a family of probability distributions on R1. This paper raises the question whether a parameter θ=θ (P), Pt, is estimable on the basis of a type I censored sample (i.e. censored on a fixed set C). Two theorems are given that state conditions on θ and C that ensure that θ is not estimable. The results are applied to estimation problems for the normal and POISSON distributions; it turns out that unbiased estimation is impossible in the majority of practical ca
