摘要:
SummaryDesign and analysis of industrial experimentsThis paper is based on a lecture on the “Design and Analysis of Industrial Experiments” given by Dr O. L. Davies on the 8th of May1954to the Industrial Section of the “Vereniging voor Statistiek”. Production, formulation, and testing are distinguished as three separate fields of chemical activity where experimental designs can be applied, and various numerical examples of such experiments are discussed in detail. They consist of a23factorial design, a24half replicate and a25quarter replicate fractional factorial design, and a three‐way classification. In a final section the recent designs developed by Box for the exploration of response surfaces are briefly c

摘要:
SummaryExperimental designs in industry. It is pointed out that in industry owing to the greater speed of modem mass‐production we have a greater need for simple experimental designs than in agriculture. The paper makes a special and extensive study of the simplest of all designs: the two‐way classification.A distinction is made between qualitative and quantitative factors; factors for which we do not, and for which we do know the levels. Three cases must then be distinguished:(1)two qualitative factors, (2)one qualitative and one quantitative factor, and(3)two quantitative factors. To these, different methods of variance analysis must be applied; in(1)the customary analysis according to rows and columns is adequate, but in(2)we can effectively use polynomial regression analysis in one direction, and in(3)we can do so in both directions. Examples of each of these types of analysis are provided. The opinion is expressed that the analysis of variance serves to pick out from among a number of conceivable models, the simplest model that will adequately describe the observations, and further to provide an estimate of the residual fluctuations. The result of an analysis of variance is of no use for technical purposes; the model chosen expressed in the form of a numerical equation is the information to be used in the fact

摘要:
SummaryThe development of mathematical statistics during the last ten years.Due mainly to the stimulating influence of the rapid development of mathematical statistics in England and the U.S.A. during and just after the war, the amount of work in the Netherlands in this field has been much greater and on a higher international level than before the war. A more favourable atmosphere for application of mathematical statistics has been growing. Education of young statisticians and, to a certain extent, statistical research have been promoted by the institution of chairs of mathematical statistics at several Dutch Universities. However, an insufficient number of young people are willing to devote themselves to fundamental research work, and too many of them are absorbed by industry. If this will not change within the next few years, it will hardly be possible to maintain the present level of mathematical statistical work.

摘要:
SummaryA decade of social statistics. The development of descriptive statistics in the post‐liberation period can be characterized by the concepts integration and differentiation: side by side with an increasing knowledge of totality there is a constantly growing attention for detail.More so than formerly the central aim of international statistics is the obtaining of a statistical total picture in which on the one hand various statistics and on the other hand various countries can be shown. Moreover, differentiation can be distinguished: on the one hand as to fields of research, on the other hand as to geographical territories. Also from a national point of view there are intensive, integrating tendencies. There is e.g. the system of national accounts in which statistics perform an Emportant executive task.Improvement of information and statistical co‐ordination have been taken in hand; consistency is a requirement of the first order and regionalisation is often necessary. With respect to productivity — of major importance for the prosperity of our country — statistics were faced by a great task; much statistical work was done, productivity centres were established and research was organized.Furthermore random sampling technique and public opinion polls, which are indispensable to efficiently collecting statistical data, show an amazing development.More and more research and planning are making use of sta

摘要:
SummaryA decade of industrial statisticsThis paper deals with a review about the development of industrial statistics in the Netherlands during the last ten years.Different factors influenced this development: a great need of statistical treatment of problems caused by the evolution of modern industry; the availability of useful statistical tools; the activity of a number of competetent industrial statisticians; the greater openness for new ideas and the better climate with reference to industrial statistics. A detailed discussion of these factors is given.
