SamenvattingHet optreden van “tweelingstormen” aan de Nederlandse kust.Enige dagen voor Kerstmis 1954 volgden twee vrij zware stormen dicht op elkaar (21 en 23 December). Dit deed de vraag rijzen of wellicht zulke “tweelingstormen” vaker voorkomen dan te rijmen volt met een aselecte verdeling van stormen over de dagen van een jaar. Bij een dergelijk onderzoek — hier gebaseerd op windsnelheden gemeten in den Helder van 1904—1944 en van 1945—1953—dient rekening gehouden te worden met seizoeneffecten. De “jaarlijkse gang” der stormfrequentie werd onderzocht en een sinus‐vormige kromme werd aangepast (fig. 3). De waargenomen en de theoretisch verwachte frequentie — de laatste onder de hypothese van aselectheid — van de tijdsintervallen tussen op elkaar volgende stormen werden berekend en uitgezet in fig. 2. Een toets, gebaseerd op combinatie van 2 × 2‐tabellen, werd toegepast om deze hypothese te toetsen.Daarbij bleek, dat tweeling‐stormen inderdaad vaker voorkomen dan op grond van aselecte verdeling der stormen te verwachten is en wel ongeveer twee a drie maal zo vaak. De kans op een storm is twee en drie dagen na een storm groter dan anders. Dit feit kan van belang zijn voor de keuze van de hoogte van zee‐dijken. SummaryThere are different methods to analyse an orthogonal scheme of experimental numbers, showing some missing plots. In this paper it is shown by a simple illustrative example how such an analysis can be made. Some rules for diflerent cases are given, together with some derivations of the precepts used.

SummaryAn exposition of the missing plot technique often applied in analysis of variance is given in very general terms.Non‐orthogonality mostly implies heavy computations. If the scheme of observations is almost orthogonal this technique, however, supplies in a simple way unbiassed and efficient estimates of the expectation values which occur in a linear hypothesis underlying an analysis of variance. Moreover the correct residual sum of squares required for a test or a confidence interval estimation is obtained without difficulty.A correct test of an effect or an interaction will be provided by two estimates, the first under the null‐hypothesis, the second under the alternative hypothesis. In the case of non‐orthogonality this may imply two separate applications of the discussed technique. The difference between the two residual sums of squares will be used for the numerator of a valid F‐criterion.The technique is illustrated by an

SummaryThe recently repeated assertion that in correlation analysis it makes little difference whether one variable (x2) is used instead of another one (x3), provided the coefficient of correlation (r23) between x2and x3is high, is scrutinized.To that purpose the ranges of coefficients of correlation with respect to the substitute variable are expressed in formula 3. Moreover, by way of example, extreme values of coefficients of simple correlation (r13and r34), of multiple correlation (R1.34and R3.14) and of regression (α13and α14, α31and α34) relating to the substitute variable, are calculated on the basis of empirical values of coefficients of simple correlation relating to the substituted and the remaining variables.The outcome of those calculations are summarized in the tables 1 and 3, and in the graph.Table 1 presents ranges of r13for given values of r12and r23, table 3 shows extreme values of coefficients of single and multiple correlation and regression in case an additional variable x4is introduced and r12, r14, r24and r23are given.
