SummaryThe well‐known inequality of Bienaymé‐Tschébyschef (for short B‐T), generalized by Camp and Meidell (for short C‐M) for continuous, unimodal distributions gives specific limits for total probabilities outside the ± to limits.In many cases however, especially in the field of industrial applications we are interested only in the probability of one tail of the distribution, which of course must be smaller than the limits given by the B‐T and C‐M formula.For these cases the maximum probability of surpassing the to limit on one side equalsunder B‐T conditions andunder C‐M conditions instead of the two‐sided values of 1/t2and 47/9 · 1/t2respectively (cf e.g. Uspensky: “Introduction to mathematical probability”, 1937, p. 198) These results set upper limits for the value ofAlternatively we may also set an upper limit for the integralwhich measures in terms of σ the average amount by which the limit x̄+ tσ is exceeded. SummarySome remarks on the design of clinical trials of cancer chemotherapeutic agents.After a general introduction on the aim of clinical trials, some factors are discussed, which are of special importance in clinical trials of cancer chemotherapeutic agents. The effects of these agents on specified tumor types should be compared concurrently with those of placebos in equivalent groups of patients.

SamenvattingHet uitgangspunt van dit artikel is een commissie van N personen, die tot taak heeft een beslissing te nemen op basis van de voorkeuren van zijn leden. Deze voorkeuren worden weergegeven door voorkeursfuncties, die eenduidig verondersteld worden afgezien van een willekeurig nulpunt en eenheid. De gevolgde procedure houdt in, dat een commissievoorkeursfunctie word geconstrueerd, die een lineaire combinatie is van alle individuele voorkeursfuncties. De gewichten van deze lineaire combinatie worden afgeleid uit de zogenaamde verliezenmatrix, waarvan elk element aangeeft het verlies (d.i. de reductie beneden het bereikbare voorkeurmaximum), dat een commissielid i lijdt wanneer een comissielid j erin slaagt zijn wil aan de commissie op te leggen. In beginsel wordt aanbevolen de verliezenmatrix symmetrisch te maken, hetgeen dan leidt tot eenduidige gewichten van de genoemde lineaire combinatie en dus tot een eenduidige cornmissievoorkeursfunctie. Dit beginsel kan echter niet altijd worden gerealiseerd; aanbevolen wordt dan de rijsommen van de verliezenmatrix gelijk te maken aan de corrresponderende kolomsommen. SummaryIn calculating formulas to determine the optimal number of machines assigned to an operator, the ratio of service time to machine operating time is supposed to be a constant for a given type of equipment. Changing the cutting speed on automatic lathes changes the tool life and the unit production time and, therefore, the ratio of service time to machine operating time and the efficiency. In this article a method to determine the optimal cutting speed and the corresponding optimal number of machines assigned to an operator is given. An example is given in which it was possible to attain a saving of f 2200 per lathe per year by assigning 7 lathes to an operator instead of 3. A further saving of f 5500 per lathe per year was calculated by decreasing the cutting speed to three‐fourths of its original value and correspondingly assigning 15 to 17 lathes to one operato
