摘要:
Bone metastases are usually osteolytic, rarely osteoblastic. Sclerotic metastases have never been reported in renal cell carcinoma. A case of a hypernephroma with widespread sclerotic metastases is reported. The patient was a 34-year-old male first seen at the Royal Marsden Hospital on July 15, 1967. He presented with a history of anorexia, weight loss and low backache. On examination he was emaciated and had a palpable right kidney. A rectal examination was normal. One month previously, when in the United States, he was shown to have a mass lesion of the right kidney. A biopsy then from his posterior superior iliac crest was reported as showing clear cell metastatic tumour.

摘要:
A limited survey has been undertaken to assess the possible reduction in total skin dose, during mammography, resulting from the use of Medichrome blue film with an intensifying screen in place of conventional non-screen film, as recommended by Price and Butler (1971) and Samual (1974).A Siemens' Mammomat was used. This has a tube with a rotating molybdenum anode, a 0·6 mm focal spot and a total filtration of 0·5 mm Al equivalent which includes a beryllium window and a 30 μm molybdenum filter. The focus-film distance is fixed at 45 cm. Exposures were made at 30 kVp using an automatic exposure control system.

摘要:
We wish to report a recent case when a patient with a large tumour of the lower right lip was referred to the Radiotherapy Department of the Churchill Hospital, Oxford. The tumour measured 27 mm in maximum diameter and 20 mm in thickness; histologically it was a moderately differentiated squamous-cell carcinoma. It was decided that the whole thickness of this part of the lip and tumour, a depth of 32 mm, should be included in the target volume. To enable the volume irradiated to be minimized, the 10 MeV electron beam from a MEL SL 75 Linear Accelerator was used. The tissues behind the tumour were shielded by lead inserted between the lip and the gum (Sampiere, Almond and Shalek, 1973) which was edentulous. A dose of 4,400 rads in 11 sessions, three times a week, was prescribed.

摘要:
Following reports by one of the present authors, then working in South Africa, of chromosome aberrations produced in cultured human leucocytes by exposure to diagnostic levels of ultrasound (Macintosh and Davey, 1970; 1972) a number of other workers have published results of similar studies (Abdullaet al., 1972; Bobrowet al., 1971; Boydet al., 1971; Buckton and Baker, 1972; Braeman, Coakley and Gould, 1974; Coakleyet al., 1971, 1972; Rott, Soldner and Van Zyl, 1972; Watts, Hall and Fleming, 1972). With a single exception (an abstract by Fischman, Coleman and Lizzi, 1972) all these reports have been negative. Not all of Macintosh's samples that were treated in South Africa showed the same rate of aberration production as those of the published studies. The possible occurrence of cavitation in some samples suggested one explanation for this lack of reproducibility; particularly since in an earlier (unpublished) series of experiments high aberration yields were obtained in the presence of cavitation.

摘要:
The device (Fig. 1) incorporates two moving systems driven by a mains-operated synchronous motor. One consists of a drum which rotates at a speed of 1 deg./hour and the other a threaded rod along which a pointer driven by means of a half-nut moves at ¾in./hour. The drum carries chart of radial lines corresponding to absolute values of elution strength. (MC).

摘要:
In 1896, Thomas Edison discovered the effectiveness of calcium tungstate as a phosphor for intensifying the X-ray image. Nearly 80 years later, CaWO4is still the most widely used material for diagnostic X-ray intensifying screens.Within the last few years new phosphors have become available in the U.S.A. (AEC–NASA, 1972).These materials, which are terbium-activated rare earth oxysulphides (e.g.gadolinium and lanthanum oxysulphides), are reported (Buchanan, Finkelstein and Wickershelm, 1972) to have a high X-ray to visible light conversion efficiency and high X-ray absorption coefficients.

摘要:
A one-day meeting will be held on tumour microcirculafion and closely related topics, on Saturday, June 14, 1975 at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York. This meeting will be immediately before the Toronto First World Congress for Microcirculation. The topics to be discussed will be focused around the problems concerning tumour vascular supply, the physiology of blood flow, the tumour microcirculation and the influence of therapy on the microvasculature.Further information from: Dr. Hubert Reinhold, c/o Roswell Park Memorial Institute, 666 Elm Street Buffalo, New York 14203, U.S.A.
