This work is in two sections: the first 100 pages, by Dr. Medjek, cover angiographie technique and anatomy, while the remaining 140, by Dr. Dietemann, deal with pathology, in eight chapters on tumours, vascular disease, trauma, etc. Illustrations of generally excellent quality occupy about half the book. Regrettably, they are grouped at the end of each chapter; it would have been preferable to intersperse them with the text.

AbstractVisual assessment of left ventricular function from cinéangiography was compared with computerised assessment in 48 randomly selected cinéangiograms. The parameters compared included end-diastolic volume, end-systolic volume, stroke volume, ejection fraction and left ventricular output. There was poor agreement between visual and calculated values for end-diastolic volume, stroke volume and left ventricular output, but good agreement for ejection fraction and moderately good agreement for end-systolic volumes. Absolute values are particularly difficult to assess.

AbstractAntero-posterior radiographs of the larynx lack spatial and temporal resolution, due to the movement of the vocal folds during phonation. By utilising the electrolaryngograph to monitor vocal fold movement, single X-ray pulses of 30 nanoseconds duration have been triggered at pre-determined points during the cycle of vocal fold movement to visualise these in normal phonation.

Following the reduction in deaths from infectious diseases, the total mortality from malignant disease in children after the first year of life has, in Britain, been greater than from any other cause except accidents. A study of incidence and mortality due to childhood cancer is therefore important, and this report supplies the essential data for such a study.

AbstractThe capacity of conventional and new low-osmolality contrast agents to stimulate histamine release from human basophils has been studiedin vitro. When compared on an iodine concentration basis, the new agents release less histamine than the conventional agents at intermediate and higher concentration. However, the newer compounds exhibit a biphasic histamine release response to increasing iodine concentration with a low concentration peak, a phenomenon not previously described. Among the conventional ionic agents, meglumine salts were confirmed to be more potent histamine releasers than sodium salts. Possible mechanisms of this histamine release and the bearing of the findings on the safety of contrast media are discussed.

AbstractCholinergic mechanisms, activated by the inhibition of the acetylcholine hydrolysing enzyme cholinesterase, may be responsible for many of the adverse effects of intravascular radiological contrast media. The relative cholinesteraseinhibiting activities of several conventional and new contrast media have been measured and significant differences found. Some of the possible implications of these differences are discussed.

AbstractA method for imaging the right side of the heart (atrium, ventricle and main pulmonary artery) and for assessment of RV systolic function (ejection fraction and ejection rate) is described. An ultra-short-lived isotope (81Krm) is continuously eluted in 5% dextrose and infused into an ante-cubital arm vein; standard multigated images are acquired using a gamma camera and commercially available software. Preliminary evaluation of the method in 55 subjects (20 with repaired tetralogy of Fallot, 14 with dilated cardiomyopathy and 21 normal volunteers) showed that the technical success rate was 100%; that RV boundaries free from LV overlap can be clearly visualised due to efficient exhalation of81Krmthrough the lungs and that81Krmmeasurements of RVEF are reproducible. The technique offers considerable potential for serial non-invasive assessment of RV function.

The subjects covered include particle beam therapy, radiosensitisers, altered fractionation, and hyperthermia. There are introductory papers and a summary. A problem always present in the publication of such proceedings is that the papers may be quite brief and the information may soon be out of date. To a certain extent this book does suffer in this respect.

AbstractThe major hazards encountered by staff using neutrons for radiotherapy are discussed. Specific reference is made to the experience gained at the MRC Cyclotron Unit at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, using neutrons generated by the d(15 MeV)+ Be reaction. The neutron therapy facility consists of a cyclotron and both a fixed horizontal and an isocentric therapy beam, and staff protection during five years' operation is reviewed. Levels of induced activity in the cyclotron and therapy equipment are reported and problems of radioactive contamination discussed. Summaries of whole-body and finger dose equivalents received by engineering staff, and of whole-body dose equivalents received by physics and radiography staff, are presented and analysed. It is shown that, although doses received by staff are higher than for staff in an X-ray facility, they are all well below the maximum permissible levels, and it is also concluded that radioactive contamination of staff is minimal.
