摘要:
It is unusual to attribute significant narrowing of a hollow viscus to adjacent venous structures. Although the pulmonary veins are in close proximity to the oesophagus, dysphagia, due to these veins indenting the oesophagus, is a rare condition because of what is normally low pulmonary venous pressure. Nash, Friedenberg and Goetz (1961) have reported a case of a 49-year-old woman whose dysphagia was closely related to extrinsic pressure from a mildly aberrant pulmonary vein simulating an intrinsic lesion of the oesophagus. We have encountered a similar patient in whom dysphagia was present only during episodes of congestive failure.A 53-year-old Negro woman entered the hospital because of dyspnoea, dysphagia, vomiting, and weakness of one week's duration. She had been hospitalized several times during the previous ten years for episodes of congestive failure and was known to have diabetes mellitus and mild renal insufficiency.

摘要:
As suggested by the title, this volume contains a number of articles by contributors from 11 countries. Thirteen of the 25 contributions are in German, frequently with only very short English summaries. The 12 articles in English range from experimental and clinical studies of lung perfusion scans to the effects of radiation on the metabolism of monocarbon fragment precursors of carbon dioxide.

摘要:
There has been correspondence recently concerning the shape of the electron beam depth-dose curves in the range 3–10 MeV. The letter by Orchard and Martin-Smith (1971) draws attention to the increase in the ratio of peak dose to surface dose as the electron energy is reduced. Boag (1972) points out that this phenomenon is predicted theoretically (Spencer, 1959) and gives a qualitative explanation for the appearance of the peak, caused by the increasing obliquity the electron paths as they penetrate below the surface of a phantom.

摘要:
Ionization chambers designed for use with the Farmer Dosemeter Mk. II (Farmer, 1955) are in frequent use for X- and γ-ray dosimetry in many radiotherapy and research departments. The chambers are assumed to be “open” to atmospheric temperature and pressure changes, and correction factors based on the gas laws are usually applied to correct the instrument readings to standard temperature and pressure. Such correction factors are normally of the order of a few per cent, but appreciable errors can be incurred if the instrument is subjected to sudden temperature or pressure changes, and insufficient time is allowed for the air inside the ionization chamber to reach equilibrium with the atmosphere.

摘要:
With reference to the letter in this issue from Mr. Alan Robinson concerning the above, we would like to record the facts as far as we the manufacturers are concerned, in order that the significance of the incident reported may be viewed by readers in proper perspective. Our attention was drawn to this problem by the National Physical Laboratory, in March, 1971, who informed us that four chambers submitted for calibration were apparently sealed to varying degrees of effectiveness.

摘要:
Thick sections of trabecular bone from an adult human femur were examined with the scanning electron microscope, at low magnifications (about ×l5 and ×40 on the photographs), to investigate the general arrangement of the bone. Some quantitative measurements were made, which led to estimates of the surface area and perimeter of the bone surface and of the average widths of the trabeculae, as seen on the surface, and which also give some information about the degree of orientation of the trabeculae.

The British Society of Digestive Endoscopy was inaugurated in 1971; President: Dr. Sidney True-love. It is the aim of the Society to bring together not only endoscopists but other workers in related fields. Those interested are asked to write to: The Hon. Secretary Dr. K. F. R. Schiller, St. Peter's Hospital, Chertsey, Surrey. Tel. Ottershaw 2000.
