摘要:
The Röntgen Society celebrates the jubilee of its foundation on June 3, 1947, and it is well to look back to see how far the intentions of the founders have been fulfilled and how the constitution with which they endowed the infant society has influenced its history.Early in 1897 Dr. David Walsh and Dr. Harison Lowe proposed to form a society with a membership that was confined to medical men for the study of the application of the new rays to medical problems. It was to be called “The X-ray Society”. But as the preliminary discussions proceeded and more medical men joined in the movement, it was decided that the society should be devoted to the study of X rays inallits aspects and that the membership should, therefore, be open to anyone who had shown a scientific interest in the X rays. It was on this basis that rules were drafted and names selected for the proposed council for submission to a general meeting called for June 3, 1897. At this meeting, with Professor Sylvanus Thompson in the chair, all the proposals were accepted except that the name of the new body was altered to “The Röntgen Society”. Also one seemingly slight addition was made to the rules,i.e., that no new rule could be introduced or existing rules altered except by a three-fourths majority at a general meeting.

摘要:
The title of this paper is to some extent misleading, as, if I were to attempt to discuss with you the complete interpretation of children's chest X rays, it would obviously take considerably longer than the one hour which is allotted to me. I therefore do not propose to discuss the differential diagnosis of such conditions as congenital heart lesions. In addition it is impossible in such a short time to attempt to enumerate systematically all the pathological conditions that may occur in the chest, and to give a full radiological description of the possible findings. I propose, therefore, to approach the problem from the point of view primarily of the X-ray film, and to attempt to classify different types of abnormalities seen in the films, and to suggest the differential diagnosis of these abnormal opacities or translucencies. The interpretation of the child's chest radiograph should in theory be easier than the interpretation of the X ray of an adult, in that the pathological entities that may be present are rather less numerous. However, to balance this, there are other difficulties which creep in. These difficulties are nearly always technical, as in an infant it is impossible to control respiration and, frequently, movement. It is, therefore, not easy to ensure that the films are taken in full inspiration. With very young children, strangely enough, it is easier as a rule to obtain a satisfactory radiograph if the child is crying.

摘要:
Owing to its precision and the high quality of its results, the Lysholm table is becoming increasingly popular in the radiography of the skull. It is hoped that the following note will prove of service to an increasing number of users. As the tube may be tilted about the vertical in two planes independently, the moving grid mechanism of the table is mounted on a turntable so that the latter may be turned to permit the rays to travel always along the slats instead of across them.

摘要:
Tumours and tissue cultures of mouse adenocarcinoma 63 were subjected to a dose of 2000 r of X radiation and the changes in mitosis and occurrence of degenerate cells examined quantitatively and compared for a period of ten days following radiation. The changes seen were qualitatively similarin vivoandin vitro: arrest of mitosis, abnormal mitotic figures, similar types of cell degenerations and increase of cell size were distinguished under both sets of conditions.Cell counts showed that mitosis reappeared shortly after exposure in the tumour, while the incidence of degeneration on the first day was of the same orderin vivoandin vitro; on the second day and later, a striking rise in the number of degenerate cells and a failure of further mitotic recoveryin vivoaccompanied by a marked vascular reaction were observed. It was concluded that during the first day after exposure the effect of radiation is mainly a direct one, that from the second day onwards the additional indirect effect via a damaged blood circulation comes into play. The cell counts showed that about one third of the radiation effect was due to the direct—and two thirds to the indirect—action of radiation.
