摘要:
A brief general survey of recent developments in diagnostic X-ray equipment (since 1939) is given; Skull equipment, Chest equipment, Universal apparatus, Gastrointestinal apparatus and Mass Chest Survey equipment are dealt with in particular. A new screening technique and mirror camera for Mass Chest work are described, as well as an automatic technique selector and overload protection system for universal equipment.

摘要:
The symptomatology and the results of the surgical treatment of chromophobe adenoma are reviewed. The points for and against the X-ray treatment of these tumours are discussed, and evidence is adduced that they are amenable to this form of treatment.

摘要:
The appearance of gas shadows in joints under certain conditions is well known. Young children whose laxity of the joint ligaments allows wide separation of the articular surfaces are especially prone to accumulate gas in the joint space when the joint is placed under strain. The occurrence of gas in the joint under these conditions may be regarded as physiological, but, equally, under certain pathological conditions gas may appear in joint spaces. Osteo-arthritic joints are especially prone to show gas in the joint space, but even in such cases gas does not appear unless strain is put on the joint. The large joints of the extremities are the most frequent sites for gas formation; gas formation in intervertebral disc spaces occurs much less frequently, but when it does it is always pathological and indicates the presence of an abnormal space in the intervertebral disc. The origin of gas in joints is to a large extent speculative. Most authorities are agreed that the gas comes from that held in solution in the synovial fluid. In the intervertebral disc where there is no such synovial fluid the gas must originate from the blood stream. The anatomical basis for the appearance of gas in an intervertebral disc lies in the fact that whilst the nucleus pulposus disintegrates the annulus fibrosus remains intact, creating a potential space in the centre of the disc. Under strain this space creates a vacuum in the disc, which, in turn, attracts the gaseous contents dissolved in the blood.

摘要:
The patient was a native mine labourer named Vevile, approximately 30 years of age, from Lady Frere, in the Cape Province. He was employed at Nigel Gold Mine, and while there had a medical history of urticaria, backache, blood in his stools, and a cough. His stools were negative for parasites. An X ray of his chest was taken, which revealed nothing abnormal, except for a small calcified lesion in the left lung, near the heart border. An X ray which was taken of his abdomen revealed numerous small calcified lesions in an area corresponding to his liver, similar to the lesion seen in his left lung.He was then transferred to our hospital for further investigation.PhysicalExamination: His liver and spleen were not palpable; abdominal examination revealed no abnormality. There were no adventitious sounds in his chest.

摘要:
Three further cases of calcification of the nymphs of the linguatulid armillifer (porocephalus) armillatus have been demonstrated radiographically in the living West African native. This brings the total reported to five.

摘要:
Although clinical, pathological and radiological characteristics of volvulus of the cæcum have been described in the literature, the occurrence of a volvulus in the course of a barium enema and the possibility of demonstrating the actual twisting of the bowel in this way seems to justify a short report.A man of seventy-two years had been suffering for about ten months from sudden attacks of severe pain in his right lower abdomen, followed by profuse diarrhœa.Examination revealed tenderness at the cæcal region, but no tumour could be palpated.

摘要:
A G-M counter of the jacketed tube type for β-ray measurements on liquid samples is described, together with a convenient means of mounting in a lead shield. It is shown that the counting rate obtained when the counter is filled is proportional to the concentration of radioactive substance in the solution. Methods for applying corrections for errors due to dead time of the counter and for variations in specific gravity of the solution are given, together with a calibration curve showing the absolute efficiency of the counter for various radioactive isotopes. The counter has proved useful for measurements of the radioactivity of whole blood, plasma, urine, etc., in medical tracer experiments.
