SummaryDaily growth increments were studied in otoliths of early stageOreochromis aureus(Cichlidae, Teleostei). A laboratory experiment was carried out on the effect of temperature and food ratio on the otolith growth of juvenile fish. Juvenile O.aureuswere reared at two different temperatures, 17°C and 28°C respectively. The young fish were fed two different ratios Trouvit beginning with the first day of swimming and external feeding. Samples were taken at random from each group and the sagitta otoliths were examined. Otolith growth was linearly related to somatic growth of individual fish. Otolith microstructure analysis showed that increment formation began two to three days prior to the transition to the free‐swimming stage and continued thereafter following a daily pattern. SummaryThe study was undertaken to determine the optimum combination of the frequency of water replenishment and fertilization that can yield the highest growth, survival, and gross production of milkfish. Results indicated that mean body weight and survival were not significantly different (P>0.05) among the treatments. Gross fish production was higher in biweekly fertilization if considered as a single factor. However, when this was in combination with the weekly or biweekly water replenishment, similar gross fish production was attained. In any case, because biweekly fertilization has a better effect than a weekly schedule, the former should be used in combination with any other level of replenishment. A weekly water replenishment, however, is impractical in big pond areas of 5–10 ha compartments which are still common in some milkfish ponds in the Philippines. SummaryA 562 base pair fragment of DNA from a serotype A strain ofVibrio anguillarumwas cloned into pUC9 and used as a hybridization probe for the rapid identification ofVibrio anguillarumby colony hybridization. The probe was tested on nine different fish pathogens, 15Vibrioisolates, 2 organisms closely related toVibrio, and 9 serotypes ofV. anguillarum.The probe hybridized only with the DNA ofV. anguillarumserotypes A and H. The sequence of the 562 nucleotides have been determined. This probe allows rapid, reliable, and specific detection ofV. anguillarumin freshwater ayu,Plecoglossus altivelis.

SummarySerum and muscle activities of enzymes (LDH, ALD, CK and ICDH) in intensively farmed catfish(Ictalurus melas)and common carp(Cyprinus carpio)were determined bimonthly between July 1 and November 2. Catfish serum enzymes showed no significant differences under different environmental conditions (exception = CK; values increased slighfly in the last sample). In carp serum, a remarkable increase of LDH and ALD occurred during the cold season. Muscle enzyme activity decreased in both species with decreasing water temperature and reduced metabolic activity.

SummaryClinical blood tests on fish exposed to contaminants are used extensively both in laboratory and field studies. Seasonal variability is examined in some of the parameters commonly used in health assessments. Hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration and inorganic ion concentration were studied in perch,Perca fluviatilis, from a Baltic brackish water area. Seasonal cycles were demonstrated in hematocrit and in chloride, magnesium and potassium ion concentrations. Other parameters studied reacted irregularly or only slightly to the shift of seasons.

SummaryThis is the first report of lipoma in the European eelAnguilla anguilla.In a single eel that was obtained from a polyculture fish farm in northern Egypt, a yellowish swelling (10 mm in diameter) was observed near the tip of the lower lip. The tumor was composed of mature lipocytes that occasionally fused into an unlined cystic space.
