摘要:
Forty-two Swiss-German cancer patients rated their social network and support system on the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire. Sixty-nine percent were married. 61.9% were female, and the mean age was 58 years. The sampled listed an average of 9.3 people in their social support network. The subjects reported knowing the great majority of those network members listed for more than 5 years. While having a relatively small network, the duration of the relationships suggests network stability. The family and spouses were perceived as providing a mean of 70% of the total functional support. The results obtained from the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire are compared and interpreted using data from patient interviews. Comparisons of some of the findings from this study with those from studies of two other cultural groups (Taiwanese and Egyptian) and from a normative sample of employed adults (U.S.A.) are included. The Swiss-German cancer patients who had described their social networks as containing more people, and who felt more affirmed by others, tended to view their illness experience more favorably. Patients with small social networks and low perceived support need more attention and support from nurses. The importance of inclusion of significant others into nursing care can be inferred from the findings.

摘要:
This descriptive study explored the concerns of terminally ill adult hospitalized Hindu cancer patients in Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi, India. A one-time interview with 11 patients and six informants was conducted in Hindi by the investigator. A content analysis of the patient and informant interviews revealed five major categories of concern themes: physical or physiological concerns, illness-related concerns, social concerns, personal concerns, and spiritual concerns. The informants also indicated concerns of their own: concerns related to patients' illness, social concerns, spiritual concerns, and personal concerns. Implications for nursing practice are discussed.

摘要:
This article addresses the development of cancer nursing as a specialty. It highlights the efforts of nurses around the world as they seek to understand the disease called cancer and the complexity of the treatments used. It emphasizes the role of nurses in the international community as they respond to the common challenge to obtain more cancer information and learn how to provide the care, teaching, and support that patients and their families need. As cancer nursing has evolved as a specialty in the United States, so has it also begun to evolve as a specialty in various parts of the world. What it means to be international, a historical overview of events that occurred in response to the need and demand for more information, and future directions for cancer nurses everywhere are presented.

摘要:
A comparative trial of relaxation training and a metoclopramide-dexamethasone-diphenhydramine regimen demonstrated some degree of antiemetic effect for both methods in patients receiving highly emetic cancer chemotherapy. The drug regimen clearly was more powerful in blocking the peak phase of vomiting in most patients. However, the total emetic period was 4 h shorter in the relaxation group. A newly developed, more specific tool for measuring emetic response, the Emetic Process Rating Scale, was evaluated and found clinically useful by eight nurse clinicians supporting patients in the study. In addition, a new pre-chemotherapy teaching program was created and is in current use with patients receiving highly emetic cancer chemotherapy.

摘要:
As the prognosis for Hodgkin's disease improves, clients face many issues related to quality of life. Of paramount concern to women with Hodgkin's disease are issues related to sexual and reproductive health. Since nurses are likely professionals to whom patients may direct such concerns, it is imperative for them to be knowledgeable about the effects of Hodgkin's disease and its treatment on these areas. Part I of this paper discusses areas of concern for women with Hodgkin's disease, including sexual health, quality of relationships, fertility, and potential parenting concerns. In Part II, the PLISSIT model of sexual counseling is presented as a basis for assessment and intervention. A data base and nursing care plan, based on this model, are presented. Clinical applications for the nurse and suggestions for research are included.

摘要:
Energy expenditure as a factor in both the pathogenesis of cancer cachexia and in the clinical course of a malignancy has received relatively little attention in the oncology nursing literature. Nursing interventions that are done to influence nutritional status and day-to-day functional abilities of cancer patients may be compromised by alterations in energy requirements and availability of nutrients. Energy expenditure as one clinical manifestation of cancer and current measurement techniques for assessing energy expenditure are described. By becoming more familiar with the current state of knowledge of aberrations in energy expenditure that accompany cancer, nurses may be able to anticipate more accurately patterns of patient debility and to incorporate more refined strategies for assisting patients and families to cope with changes.
