摘要:
This survey of lung cancer patients' smoking habits was undertaken in order to identify ways to assist lung cancer patients and their families to quit smoking. Fifty-seven patients with lung cancer provided information about motivations and methods for stopping smoking, benefits, withdrawal symptoms, advice for people wishing to quit, opinions about the causes of lung cancer, and resumption of smoking. Results are summarized; nursing implications from the survey are discussed.

摘要:
The etiology of anxiety for the patient experiencing cancer is often multifocal and persistent in origin. Hence, because of anxiety's chronic nature, the patient's overall quality of life may be negatively affected. This article will identify sources of anxiety throughout the cancer experience. Premorbid personality factors, treatment-related sources, and anxiety-laden issues around the time of imminent death or cure will be discussed. The relationship of family anxiety to patient anxiety, along with the delineation of nursing interventions, will be outlined for use throughout the entire oncologic illness continuum.

摘要:
The purpose of this study was to 1) examine the differences between oncology clients' self-reported and nurses' perceptual reports of the clients' affective states; and 2) study this difference as it relates to client denial, demographic factors of both the nurse and the client, and perceptual factors of the nurse. Using convenience sampling, 30 dyads (nurse/client dyad) were selected from a single inpatient oncology unit. The Multiple Adjective Affect Check List (MAACL) was administered to both members of the dyad to assess transient levels of anxiety, hostility, and depression. The Digit Span Backwards Test (DSBT) was administered to the client to determine the level of denial employed. Demographic and perception information was also collected.

摘要:
Although physicians have traditionally been the primary decision-makers concerning medical procedures, women have come to expect a voice in decisions regarding treatment, particularly treatment for a malignant breast lump. The physician's expertise and expectation to dictate treatment, a sense of urgency about the need to make a treatment decision, and the fears and anxieties often associated with breast cancer create stress for the patient. Decision-making under stress may be less effective than decisions made under less pressured circumstances. Nurses have the opportunity to help women anticipate a potential breast cancer diagnosis and to consider available treatment alternatives well before the crises precipitated by detecting a lump. Providing a woman with information and helping her to explore personal values and relationships related to a possible loss of a breast prior to the time when a treatment decision is needed gives the woman some confidence and control when she is faced with an actual decision. Intervention strategies for facilitating decision-making are discussed.

摘要:
Although the incidence of lymphedema has diminished over the past decade, it continues to affect an estimated 5–10% of women who have undergone a modified radical mastectomy. Yet, a review of the nursing literature shows that little has been published on the subject of lymphedema. This article reviews the pathophysiologic development of lymphedema, including the major etiologic factors which are involved. The nursing intervention of lymphedema is also examined utilizing a framework which distinguishes primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of treatment. Three case studies are presented, each examining a different level of intervention.
