摘要:
Nurses have conducted cancer research within and for the medical system for many years. This same system may be easily adapted to meet nursing needs and goals in order to conduct cancer nursing research. The Nursing Committee of the Southeastern Cancer Study Group has implemented the first formal interinstitutional cancer nursing research project (NP1) within a cancer cooperative group setting. Emphasis is placed on interest, involvement, and finally recognition out of which this project came to fruition. NP1 specifically is exploring the effects of structured patient education on protocol compliance as well as setting the precedent for future nursing research endeavors.

摘要:
Brain metastases occur in 12–24% of all persons with cancer and this incidence is expected to increase in the future. The oncology nurse working in the ambulatory and home care settings has a key role assisting persons with brain metastases and their families to live with the numerous problems assoclated with this diagnosis. The purpose of this paper is to present a framework for the nursing assessment of ambulatory patients with brain metastases. Incidence, prognosis, mechanism of spread, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of brain metastases are discussed as background for the assessment. The assessment framework was developed by the author to improve and organize care to persons with brain metastases. It has been useful in clinical practice. The assessment includes an initial baseline evaluation which Incorporates a general nursing history and a neurologlcally focused physical examination. Flow sheets are used to monitor selected parameters on an ongoing basis.

摘要:
Quality of care for oncology patients would likely be enhanced if the knowledge of nurses on specialized cancer units could be disseminated in an applicable form to nurses in other patient care agencies. Therefore, a pilot demonstration project was designed to determine the feasibility of implementing an Oncology Nursing Society Outcome Standard on Nutrition in a variety of patient care settings and to also develop guldelines for such implementation. The findings showed that the same set of criteria could effectively be applied in a variety of patient care settings. The recommendations developed for implementation were obtained from problems common to the three participating agencies.

摘要:
Hypercalcemia of malignancy is a common and potentially life-threatening complication in certain cancer patients. The onset of this complication may be abrupt or insidious and the symptoms frequently go unrecognized until the condition becomes severe. It is important that all involved, medical personnel, patient, and family members, recognize the early symptoms so that treatment may be instituted promptly. There are a variety of treatments for hypercalcemia depending upon the type of malignancy and the acuteness of the situation. Discharge teaching and appropriate community referrals are important for the patient prone to this complication.

摘要:
The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify the technical and psychological problems and concerns that arose from the treatment of persons with cancer by means of direct intraarterial Infusion. The sample consisted of four patients and their spouses whose treatment included intraarterial infusion. The data were obtained through the use of an interview guide and the interviews were conducted in the home as well as in the chemotherapy clinic. Analysis of the data revealed four major areas of concern and problems: (1) technical problems and side effects encountered; (2) psychological concerns; (3) alteration in life-style; (4) communication.

摘要:
Two studies were conducted to determine the knowledge cancer patients receiving chemotherapy have about their drugs and to determine the role of the nurse in reviewing chemotherapy information with cancer patients. The first, a descriptive study, sought to determine how much information was retained from the Informed consent procedure by adult oncology patients receiving chemotherapy for a variety of malignancies. A lack of knowledge of chemotherapy was found in the sample. In the second study subjects were randomly assigned to receive an Information visit by a nurse after the physician had obtained Informed consent. Subjects receiving the information visit showed greater accuracy of recall 3–4 weeks later than the control subjects who received a noinformative visit by the nurse. The experimental group (Information group) recognized significantly more of the names of the drugs than did the control group (t(22) = 2.73,p< 0.05). Their experimental group also recognized significantly more of the possible side effects of the drugs (t(22) = 3.21,p< 0.01), and of their lethal side effects (t(22) = 2.22,p< 0.01).
